What's the point of this rule anyway? If a rider is thirsty, why not give him a drink?

I think it is more about Team cars getting in the way and causing chaos during the last few km.

And the rule has been extrapolated to include everything and everybody else.

Needs modification IMO.

No it's illegal they should all be kicked out and made to kiss Contadors/Quintana's rear end :D

It's not a big deal is it? You would think Froome got off his bike and started pushing people off the mountain, ridiculous.

Safety reasons. They don't want riders going back to the cars at the end of the race when the pace starts to really pick up.

There are other legal ways of getting food and drinks within the last 20km though. Musettes can still be picked up at official feed stations that are placed within there, and there are neutral motorcycles around handing out bidons.

It's not a big deal in reality, but it's also a rule. That they were well aware of when they broke it. And if you break the rules then you get punished.

Absolutely, and he has been punished accordingly. He has lost 20 seconds and I'm sure if any other GC contender was in that position they would have done the same.

It's been 20 seconds for as long as I can remember. For instance, the 1996 Tour, when Big Mig bonked and was given (not lost, as that would be an advantage for a rider) 20 seconds for the same offense.

I like the idea of the clown suit. Either that or make him start five minutes later than everyone else tomorrow with no team support to get back to the front. :p

Reality? Meh, the 20 second penalty is fine. The quote I saw attributed to him though doesn't sit well (paraphrase), "Well, I didn't feed from the car. Richie did. I got food from Richie. So, I shouldn't be penalized."

I wonder if he would have lost more than twenty without the carbs.

He lost over a minute to Quintana because of the hunger knock. The 20 seconds is the penalty for getting food.

O.K.
Would have he lost more than 1:20 on Quintana without the carbs, and where would he have been in comparison to Contador (without the carbs)?

When things like this have happened in the past haven't team cars been relegated a few places back from where they should be in the following convoy for the next stage as well as the time and monetary penalties.

The carbs allowd him to give interviews and to get on the podium the impact on the race outcome was minimal.
So, a bad decision to send Porte.
20 seconds and the bills all on Froomey's account.
