A very odd list to choose from for "over rated", most of those names seem to deliver the level of achievement people expect.

To be over rated you first have to establish what a riders rating is, good luck, and then show he doesn't meet it...or won't meet it.

The two leaders, as I post are Armstrong and Wiggins.

Armstrong version 3.x , ie the 2009 and 2010, can't be called over rated because there are so very many people posters here that rate him so lowly. Indeed by finishing 3rd in the TdF last year he exceeded 75% of most peoples opinion while simultaneously falling short, way way way short, of fanboy (for lack of a better word) expectations.

I gave Wiggins my vote because his rating, on these boards, has gone shot up from "strong candidate in short time trials" (a proper rating) to "GC Contenders" which I think is a bit much.

I see Wiggins 2009 TdF success as an abberation, not a revelation. Even if he finishes in the top 10, he'll never threaten to own yellow in Paris.

Wiggins became a contender a major tour contender at last years Tour de France. He came 4th and was a revelation. Why is he overrated when the 2010 Tour hasn't even started?

Anyone?

Because that 4th is the only thing he's done GC wise, ever, basically. No Giro results, no Vuelta results, no Dauphiné, TdSuisse, Pais Vasco, Paris-Nice, Ruta Del Sol... zilch. And not even a nice set of one day wins to impress with. Basically, as things are right now, he's a one hit wonder. And yet he's the centre of one of the richest teams in the peloton (if not the richest) because of patriotic reasons.

He's focused on the Tour and in his last trial he came fourth after major improvements. Why is he overrated?

He rides the Giro as prep and the others he takes part in, doesn't do the Vuelta. Again, why if the Tour de France is his benchmark which he now sets out to be judged by, is he overrated?

What Tour de France contender sets out with the Dauphine or Pais Vasco, Ruta Del Sol, Paris- Nice, TdSuisse or Vuelta as there objective?

Alberto Contador, apparently.

Again I must suggest that on here there is a majority of posters that are out of their tiny minds....

As for the guy that suggested Sastre...!

I think Bradley is his own worst enemy for most on here. Let the legs do the talking and all that...

Contador.

I'm not saying Wiggins is bad per se (even if I don't like the man). But the media (anglophone media, mostly) make him out to be next big thing at times, like he's going to be beating Contador. Like I said, he's the centre of an immensely rich team (he and EBH), and so far, there's little in evidence to support he's worthy of that, as he may get you a top ten result in one race, plus a handful of time-trials.

Richie Porte came seventh in a Grand Tour. Is he going to be the sole* focus of a PT team next year? No.

More in the ballpark I think. When we really get down to it, we start to mention Wiggins in the same breath as Contador as he is at the current time one of the best cyclists in the world.

Still won't be in my top 4 at the Tour this year, but won't get his **** kicked by Damieno Cunego or Robert Gesink....

How can you call him overated when has won 7 TDF, he does deserve a little respect. Im not a lance fan but still he does deserve credit!

After reading this I dont know who is best. it is probably the one with most money to cover up. Pity it has come to this.

But to really change, there needs to be a cleansing from the top down. Just punishing riders won't fix it. The teams, the corporations that sponsor them and the organizations that govern the sport all have to take responsibility. Right now it is a corrupt system."

Wigans. Never even been on a GT podium and he has a high profile team built around him. Total joke.

You can't make that comment now as he has only really targeted a gc of a gt once at the tour then I will make that comment. Though i think eventually I will make that comment as he will completely flonk at the tour.

Came 4th overall in the tour and then everyone thinks he's going to win the tour. He yet has not shown consistency in A GT or any result in a stage race so far this season but I will only say he is overated after le tour. Their has been a lot of talk about him from the brits but NO RESULTS!

Again the crux of it is, without spelling it out (!), the 2010 Tour hasn't begun so how is he overrated? Again, name one poster who has said he's going to win the Tour?

It's very difficult to judge the GC credentials of a rider who has not shown us anything in any other race, or even tried to. Horner, Valverde, Gesink, Sánchez and Rodríguez showed us what they had in País Vasco, Contador, Valverde and others showed things in Paris-Nice. People are hyping Wiggins up, but on the face of it, he hasn't done very much at all. No season-long results like you get from an Alberto Contador, a Cadel Evans or a Samuel Sánchez. Nada. If his Tour doesn't go according to plan then that's a whole wasted season for the team, almost. And because he doesn't have an extensive GT history to fall back on à la Sastre or Armstrong, it's harder to get the benefit of the doubt. Most people who perform in GTs have some good performances in shorter stage races as well as indicators of what they can do. Wiggins hasn't shown us anything outside of the Tour. So how are we to judge how good he is? All we have is that one performance in last year's Tour to judge him by, and it really depends on how charitable you want to be to that ride how well you rate him as a contender.

I never said a poster said that he will win but the talk of him being on the podium is ridiculous and others have said he will. What results has he posted since the tour? He has yet to back up with a grand tour result, let alone a stage race gc result, let alone a tough stage result over harsh terrain.

EDIT: Libertine hit the nail on the head.

Sorry to be pedantic old boy, but if you read your previous post you say 'everyone thinks he's going to win the Tour'.

Why not just wait 'til next month and judge him rather than slag him off now?

You're welcome mate. I sincerely hope Cadel does very well. I also really hope Lance does well [NO NEED TO INSULT FORUM USERS]

I happen to agree with your top three, although not necessarily in that order.

As for the guy that suggested Sastre...!

Happens easily, too many poor deluded souls thinks this makes him the greatest cyclist of all time. Which is rating him above his station hence overated.
I don't think Wiggins is overrated, he came 4th, had a british team looking for a british contender who made him their GC guy, who else were they going to get? Ask if he will be top 10 at the tour and many will say no. So to be overrated what is the expectation on wiggins...and as stated lets wait for the tour to see if he meets it. I would say even for fans the most they hope for is a small fight and 3rd at absolute best. I don't think there are too many non british fans. I think cycling fans will.

I'm Australian so my most overrated is Gerrans. What has he won? a stage in every GT which is good, but in the media a result was expected on GC at paris-nice, and he's named as a classics contender in the ardennes. He's very good but it seems around here too many expect too much.

Oh, I was only asking because I wondered if you wanted that picture I have of your mother?

I'm going to give B.Wiggions until after this years TDF to make a judgement...If he fails to podium(which i think he will fail)then i would say he is definantly overatted....And a douche bag too.
