There's also a descent, unfortunately.Interesting - The Poggio is similar to Willunga Hill which Plapp flies up. However, there is much stronger competition at MSR.

Isn't it like 4km at 7.5% lol... poggio is 4km at 4% with about 200m at 8%It's not similar by any stretch of the imagination.

Is that Albert O'Bettiol? The Poggio is very similar to the Muddy Hill in Mallow, Cork (a shithole I used to live in). There's a local bloke who cycles up it with ease. He's my pick for Saturday.
Nor pack riding or descentsOutsider: Luke Plapp. Looks in decent form but never shone in one-day races.

You have to either be the best climber by a long shot, the best descender, or a top sprinter. He is none of these things.Doesn't need to descend like Nibali or Mohoric; just needs to get down with a small gap or stay in close contact with the group going down.
He is a potential Pozzato style winner though. But so are a few others, so I won't give him too many favourite stars. You have to either be the best climber by a long shot, the best descender, or a top sprinter. He is none of these things.
(Also Nibali's descending was overrated.)

If Nibali's descending was overrated then he disproves your theory, since he was not the best climber or a top sprinter. You have to either be the best climber by a long shot, the best descender, or a top sprinter. He is none of these things.

He was the best climber in that race that day as evidenced by being the only GT winner. According to Strava he was 24 seconds slower down the Poggio than Davide Cimolai, yet we never hear about Cimolai's descending prowess. If Nibali's descending was overrated then he disproves your theory, since he was not the best climber or a top sprinter.
That should never work for PogacarIf Pogacar ever wants to win MS he'll have to pretend to be out of shape, like MvdP did last year. Just get dropped on a climb in the Tirreno or something.
Now he has the disadvantage that the media are always hyping him as a favorite, so everybody will hang on his wheel. The Poggio just isn't steep enough to drop everybody.
MvdP is the obvious favorite, but Mads Pedersen has a realistic chance as well. He can handle the Poggio, has an experienced team around him, and has the sprint to finish it off.
Strava doesn't handle that segment well with all the tight hairpins. He was the best climber in that race that day as evidenced by being the only GT winner. According to Strava he was 24 seconds slower down the Poggio than Davide Cimolai, yet we never hear about Cimolai's descending prowess.
