Nibali will be in 2014 TDF shape. So he will win.

Landa will be the best climber, but they are few opportunities to show it. So 2nd for me.

I think Uran will surprise and fight for the 3rd spot with Valverde. I think Bala will struggle in the (likely) cold conditions.

Chaves, Hesjedal, Zakarin and Kruiswijk to battle for the top-5.

Don't know what to expect from Majka and Dumoulin.

Possible surprises: Firsanov and Taaramae.

Majka will be fighting for a top 5 spot.

I hope Nibali is that strong, but once Landa is let loose, it's all over for the cycling world. It's Galibier, Fuente De, and Val Martello every day. :p Maybe not that good, but I have the impression that Landa is an absolute killer. I think those two are runaway favorites, with Uran as a dark horse. If he has his best form, his team is young enough and with enough talent that they may be a huge surprise, although not a scandalous one.

Pretty much this, Landa is going to have to go berserk in the few tough mountain stages and try and get Nibali into the red early so he loses a lot of time, wont be easy thought that's for sure but it should make for entertaining racing.

Piti 3rd. Guaranteed. At least one of the other top favs (Nibs, Landa, Zakarin) will disappear - implode/crash/get sick/be kidnapped by extraterrestrials.

Between Nibali and Piti. Probably say Nibali takes it. Field is comparatively weak, this is certainly not a reflection of Tour quality this year, aside from those two, and on the weaker end.

There is one rising star who may finally be unleashed, who can put out a decent TT and climb, Majka. Now you know who the one person who voted for Majka, is and why he did so. (also things never go to form so a Nibali, Landa, Valverde podium is logical but not necessarily probable).
Personally, I would be more than happy to see that becoming true, but a voice of reason says otherwise. Comparing the power in the mountains represented by the domestiques of each of the mentioned above, their TT skills, current form etc. - I believe that it will be all between Nibbs and Landa (these two in a random order).

As for Majka, it would be good to see him podiuming in a second GT in a row. For me, this would be a definite confirmation that he is still progressing as a GC rider and may become able to take an overall GC win in one of those in the (near?) future. Still, it may largely depend on the number of factors, like e.g. cold weather conditions during the key high mountain stages (which he seems to be particularly vulnerable to - see e.g. Vuelta 2013 Andorra stage to, or even recent Tour de Romandie penultimate stage). Him finishing between 3rd and 7th in GC is a more reasonable expectation, I guess.

Nibali should be ready. He can't miss this opportunity.I think Landa will lose too much time in the TT's and he's got a weaker team despite Nieve addition.I don't expect much from Valverde because he's not too fond off cold weather,a podium will be great but i don't see it happening.Zakarin is still unproven as a GT leader so he should need some time to adjust to the new role.

Could be. Landa has the wow-factor in the mountains. Even more then Nibali. But Vincenzo is an allround-beast if he's focused and in shape.

That is the question

Defintely harder to predict after that. But it's very early on and it's the first MTF. I still think Landa or Nibali will win, would maybe add Kruiswijck or even Dumoulin, but I think he will fade in the last week.

Nibali had a weak start at the tour last year, but he was quite good at the end. I'm hopping he will do something similar this giro. Sunday should give a good indication about his fitness level. If everything's fine, he should be able to put time on everyone except dumoulin.

When has Nibali ever had the wow-factor in the mountains apart from the Tour 2014?

Giro 2013.

That wasn't wow-factor in my book. He was without a doubt the strongest, but the competition was weak.. he won the ITT and then on Tre Cime, but not really much else if I remember correctly? Anyways, I think-wow factor is leaving everybody, including Contador, in the dust on Finestre and soft-pedalling up the Mortirolo, strolling. He is a pure climber, Nibali isn't and will never be. Much more of an all-rounder.

May opinion hasn't changed, Nibali vs. Landa, Zakarin is a dark horse and has a decent shot at finishing on the podium.
I kinda expected more from Valverde, she should have been the one who tries to get as many bonus seconds as possible durning the first half of the race.

Landa hasn't done that much to convince me he's had higher climbing levels than Nibali. Sure he dropped Contador on the Finestre, but a great many people did the same thing that day. Nibali totally blew himself up yesterday, and Landa didn't gain a second

Officially he also won the stage to Bardonecchia since Santambrogio was stripped of as the winner. Another thing is, he probably could have won that stage if he really wanted to. I have to say, I think Nibali's 2013 win was just as dominant as Contador's 2011 win. It was certainly more "wow" than Quintana sneaking away and barely beating Hesjedal on the scandal-stage in 2014.

Nibali's 2013 giro, imo, marks the point where he hit the "wow-level".

Very well.. I just think the competition was very weak in 2013, as it was in 2014, but I'll give him 2014.

Im not disputing he is a better GC-rider than Landa,he is, but to me, Landa has that wow-factor in the mountains, he is a natural. Think of all the erratic climbers in the past. Many people will still claim its all too early and will still be critical of his Giro last year, but the fact of the matter is that he without a doubt was the strongest in the mountains - Aru and Contador are no scrubs.

Exactly. That second ITT uphill Mori-Polsa where he put one minute into second place was certainly wow. He stepped up big time with Astana and if not for the Horner anomaly he could've made a double in 2013. And let's remember last year Tour, the multi-mountain stage he won at La Toussuire, a 60k solo attack and still the third best climber in the stage.

Hmm... it' getting difficult. But when i have to say one i would say Kruuiswijk.

i was looking at his odds last week (80-1) thinking that it was ridiculous, but work was really busy and i never got around to sticking anything on him. i'll be so p155ed if he wins the whole thing.
