http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/13569/Wiggins-2013-programme-mapped-out.aspx

The Briton has passed out on the chance to try to take a second successive Race to the Sun because he wants to try to win the Giro d’Italia in 2013.

The twin Grand Tour bid will effect other changes to his programme, but Wiggins is prepared to depart from his 2012 formula in his attempt to take the first Giro-Tour double since Marco Pantani in 1998.
Or should this be in the ''The Sky-Con-O-Meter. Predictions on how much more ridiculous they can get'' thread?

Giro - Tour double. Mmmmmh.

Froome reminded me a lot of Pantani this year. His TTing was like seing Pantani in that final 50km ITT in the 98 tour when he came 3rd.

Indeed, same fluent style.

Both couldn't be more true. TT in the Giro was even more impressive I must say.

But to be fair, I have learned on this forum Froome always had the ability to TT, he was a Tony Martin waiting to happen ;)

Pantani's performance was especially strange since he lost about 4 minutes to Ullrich on the Tour's first TT, but from memory only lost 2 in the second TT.

To be fair to both of them, Ullrich was dead meat after les Deux Alpes.

That doesn't explain Pantani's time in comparison to the other 100 left contenders of course. Guess it was his cadence.

At that time (the final ITT) Ullrich was out of EPO for 2 weeks when Pantani had probably his kind of Motoman, as Cofidis did.

How Pantani managed to be so good in the 2000 TdF would be far more interesting but we'll probably never know.

Maybe after the disgrace on Mont Ventoux but I only remember an 'un-Pantaniesque' Pantani up till then. Armstrong humiliated him too much on Ventoux so he went for the siringe I guess. Armstrong even had to phone buddy boy Ferrari towards Courchevel, the only bad moment in his 'carreer' was that day.

I'm not so sure that Pantani had a motoman type advantage that Ullrich couldn't match. Ullrich still impressively destroyed the field on that last TT, also, he went on the attack the stage after Les Deux Alpes and put time into everybody except Pantani; and without that one bad day on Les Deux Alpes, he would have comfortably beaten Pantani.

I think it's more likely that both had access to EPO, but Ullrich just had awful luck in that his worst day coincided with Pantani's best. Possibly Ullrich didn't get a delivery the night before and Pantani got a BB in.

Epo doesn't make you immune for a "fringale" especially since it was cold.

Ulrich didn't have a physical issue... he just forgot to eat during a very cold mountain stage. It was just stupid.

Maybe slightly offtopic Wiggo-related question: can knighthood be taken away from a person? You know, like the medals and race titles, etc.

Lester Pigott and Naseem Hamed I think have had titles stripped.

but... is a knighthood equivalent to a cancer shield?

I reckon it has the same chainmail protection, 4 gold medals, one yellow jersey, and a knighthood. extraordinary allegations require extraordinary proof for extraordinary athlete for extraordinary fraud

If the playing field around here is level, consider yourselves warned.

Let's be clear. This forum is moderated by people who take part in discussions, often holding very polarised views. Of course it isn't a level playing field.

Another Godwin post.

Wiggins was awarded his knighthood by somebody else. He didn't ask for it, nor have any say in it.

Yes that is true, but my post was in response to an attempt to conflate Wiggins's knighthood with Armstrong's cancer charity. Whilst Armstrong may have set up his charity with creditable motivations, he certainly used it to try and deflect accusations of doping and imbue himself with credibility.

Wiggins can't fall back on his knighthood if he is accused of doping and say "Now look here! Of course I'm not a doper, I'm a knight of the Realm".

If anything, if he does go down for doping it will just add to his disgrace.

I agree with you the fact that both he and Brailsford accepted their Knighthoods is a good thing as if I was offered one and had been using drugs to win races I would not accept it .
