Well, when you put it that way it sounds really noble and generous towards the Giro. But, in fact, it isn't.gregrowlerson said:I think that what Wiggins is doing this season should be applauded. He already kinda did it all last season, so instead of returning to P-N, Romandie, Dauphne and the Tour, he is finding new objectives. If he goes to any of those events and doesn't win - even if he rides well - it will be viewed by the masses as failure. Also, having the reigning TDF champion CHOOSE to focus on the Giro is massive for the sport of cycling, and in particular the second biggest of the grand tours. Many will take note of the race who have never done so before, solely because Wiggins is in it and focusing on it, and it could lead to many TDF fans becoming wider fans of road cycling. This is different to when Contador rode it in 2011, because we know he rode it because he wasn't sure if he would be allowed to ride the TDF. So what Bradley is doing is something out of the box and should be respected. Let's try to win LBL while I'm at it; that's a great attitude! And with these targets it may leave him open to give the Vuelta a go later in the year (depending on how hard is has to work for Froome at the Tour).
Who follows cycling knows very well what the Giro is. Who follows Wiggo - just follows Wiggo, and doesn't care that much for particular races.
Noble gesture would have been to target the Tour again, to defend the title against the field which lacked last year and on a route which isn't, exactly, tailor made for him.
There's nothing wrong with new objectives, but winning the Tour carries more than just personal satisfaction. Especially if it's won in last year's circumstances.
