Yup it is sad but it might be the best option. He has a life outside cycling and he has enough money and a nice palmares. Though maybe he could join a pro conti team and target some smaller races if he still enjoys racing. Otherwise there is no point in doing so, those races would add nothing to his palmares.

Have you forgotten about the vuelta already? It wasnt that long ago you know. I still think Contador will be prepared for the tour.

1) He was doping in the 2012 Vuelta.

2) That is post-09/10 doping not 07&09 doping.

3) There's no reason why he will not reach at least the level he did last year or in 2011 (unless he got a tap on the shoulder), current performances tell us nothing about July.

4) Unless he's increased his doping relative to the last couple of years, I don't think he can win the Tour.

Think I missed that, when did he test positive in 2012 and for which drug?

4. you think anyone who wins the tour or any GC rides clean? Or its just AC that you are bashing?

It's a statement of fact? He will not win if he's not better than the Vuelta last year.

I hope that Contador does dope to the level required to compete for the win as I very much enjoy watching him race.

I think he will dope to the level needed for his main goals. I still think he was on decent level of doping back in the Vuelta and he said he even broke his training record which hints strongly he was doing it to a significant degree during this period. He has been underwhelming so far this year by his very high standards but while I don't think he will dope to the levels pre-ban for these earlier season races like now he is still doping nonetheless but to a lesser more miniscule level which lessens the risk over a longer period. I can see him stepping it up closer to the Tour and this is something I can see him doing over the remaining years of his career - his doping programme being solely orientated to his main one or two goals each season.

Makes sense. All he is interested in is collecting GT wins.

I'm not so sure. T-A was probably his second biggest goal of the year and he barely managed to podium.

I too see him stepping it up closer to the Tour, but not much beyond his pre-2012 Vuelta level of doping. I think that's about as far as his willing to take it, post-ban.

With the additional AFLD testing during the Tour, I don't think he thinks he has too many options there, either, other than the usual blood doping.

Are there really still people around who seriously believe that not failing a test means clean?
Cmon!

Contador has no reason to not dope as much as he did in 2011.

2009 is a different reason but in 2011 he was already 'caught'.

Normally at the age of 30 he should be able to get that giro-level. And if he gets that he has a very good chance to win the tour.

He probably thought he would walk. That his high-powered legal team would get him off. He now knows that there are further consequences. Big difference.

Plus, AFLD will be up in the mix this time around. That could have an effect.

Out of the sport for good is better than this. I'm not saying dope but if this is all there is just retire.

Think you are in danger of putting fan romanticism ahead of professional reality. Even a post dope busted flush Berti is going to be on serious money. You may find his decline cringe-worthy (hell, hes still there or thereabouts). I suspect his bank balance helps him live with it. Bert ain't risking a life ban and collapse in income for the Vasco, or Adriatica. Whether he will for le tour, who knows. Long term, it might suit Riis and Berti to stay under the radar for now....

nah, he will run out his contract (2015) provided the team still exist. EUR4-5M/year? Only an insane man would drop out of the deal like that.

Qickstep needs a GC leader:D
