It was pretty obvious he was affected by the cold as he had to be dragged up the mountain by 4 teammates, who he could barely hang on to.

I don't recognize who is and who isn't affected by cold just by looking at TV. :) Do you?

Well your post sounded as if we were just drawing conclusions from watching the tv. But Gesink himself said his legs were frozen so he couldnt do **** in the last climb. And that makes sense seeing how he performed.

He just failed, that's all. Whatever reason it had. If it was because of cold, what I don't think is necesarily truth, than next he should get dressed more and problem could be solved. Strangely this resolution didn't appear to him...we all are learning I guess.

Well it did but ..

“This was a bad day”, Sport Director Jan Boven realised afterwards. “This is not what we had hoped for. In the kilometres leading up to the final climb Robert was suffering from the cold, but because of the high pace he couldn’t change clothes. When the climb started Robert was done within half a kilometre. After that it was all about damage control. The boys waited for him and protected him, but we knew it was trouble when we saw he could hardly follow.”

make of it what you will.

That's what he said: run up to the climb he was all dressed up but because of the speed he got too warm and got rid of some clothes. When the climb began, the temperature dropped a fair bit and now he had to little clothes on and it was too late to get warm again. He admits that he wasn't dressed up properly and he should have kept his clothes with him. Him freezing up at this temperature with little clothes on is quite logical, coming from the Netherlands or not. So although it was his own fault, it didn't give a clear image of his form atm.

Giro's too cold, Tour's competition level is too high, looks like it's time to start focusing on the Vuelta. But he'll probably crack or lose a bunch of time somewhere and say he couldn't handle the heat. :p

Luckily I've given up on Robert Gesink, otherwise I'd be pretty frustrated that this guy always (and I mean always) has bad luck.

Gesink can still make it to 10th but who the f.ck cares. The stage win today would have been so much better. Anyway, he seems to be going slightly better than the weeks before so maybe he'll get another chance at a stage win.

I've hard time to byu this. He's from Holland, so he knows how cold weather looks like. He's riding in Europe for years. Even Colombians (where I believe wather is really hot generally) are able to cope with these conditions and they are racing here for few years.

Colombia is 1 of the most mountainous countries on earth. The cyclists tend to come from above 2000m altitude where the daily highs are around 15-20 degrees and obviously colder at other times of the day and night. Many will in training go up to the tierra fria above 300m where daily highs are sometimes even in the single figures.

+ there is very frequent and heavy rain

So its not as if they are coming from sweltering heat.

Just want to point out there is absolutely no guarantee he would have gotten a stage win.

Thank you for explanation. Interesting fact is that Colombians are used to tell that they learnt to cope with European cold.

There are no guarantees. However, he was the strongest guy in that break.

And bad luck robbed him of the chance to show it.
