Wow, the american women really don't know how to kick the ball. That's the weakest three penalties I've seen.

I shouldnt be watching this. Im going to feel sorry for the loser more than i feel happy for the winner.

That would be the case had US won too.

Well, that was a p!sser. You can't take three such dreadful penalties and have any claim on the result. Classic case of paying the price for not scoring more while you're dominant.

But, a hugely enjoyable game of football to watch, head and shoulders the best woman's game I've ever seen. All credit to the Japanese girls, especially Sawa, who is some player!

Morgan was my woman of the match though.:p

Ive seen that before, but i still prefer this one.

Its just my favourite type of shot, full power, right into the top corner. Not middle of the side net, but top top corner.

Feels so sweet.

And to win the world cup with it.

ofc you are right, a world cup winning penalty is just awsome..i was doing it for the lol.

:(

One of these days, SOMEONE I root for is going to win the Big One.
USA Soccer, Atlanta Braves, Tennessee Volunteers...
Someone WILL WIN, EVENTUALLY. (I'm looking at you, Andy Schleck!)

But hats off to Japan, they did what they had to do. It's impossible not to be happy for them!

An absolutely heart-wrenching loss for the US though, it feels especially bad for the likes of Rampone, Wambach, for those who this was last shot at it.

But with Morgan, possibly the most beautiful and talented woman on the planet, and Solo, the best women's goalkeeper in the world...

WE'LL BE BACK!

It's just a shame that this talented team and these talented players will largely go unnoticed for 4 years, but that's the way Soccer is in the U.S.

Today was the one that got away, but nevertheless....

USA! USA! USA!

that was my thought when my US gals got up 2-1 with about 5 minutes to play in extra time. I thought in those final minutes the US were playing too conservatively and not pushing the ball up to put pressure on Japan.

But big props to Japan. They deserve it, and I'm happy for them especially with all Japan has had to deal with since the quake/tsunami/Fukushima disasters.

Yeah, every time they were ahead, I kept thinking that the U.S. needs one more goal. They dominated the first thirty minutes but Japan just kept coming back.

I was torn from the start as to who to support. For the players, I supported the U.S., but how could you not feel for the Japanese and what this game will mean to their nation? I mostly wanted to see a fair win without controversy. We go that!

I never did see the replay of that off-sides call that negated a possible breakaway for Japan. I was glad that didn't become a deciding factor.

Heartbreaking loss for the U.S. women, but today was already a national holiday in Japan and their country got to start the day with a beautiful and determined victory. The players will be instant legends at home.

Isn´t soccer wonderful? Japan wins a meaningless event, but is happy and can forget a real tragedy ("Fukushima").... bread and circuses

I would definitely not call it meaningless, at all. This was also one of the most exciting soccer (football) matches I've seen. Well, at least until the very end, which was ruined by stupid rules.

Not to sound like a bitter American, in the end the team that wanted it more won it. But to end not only a match, but an entire World Cup on penalty kicks is just a downright stupid rule. It's the stupidest rule I can think of in any sport.

Imagine the baseball World Series. 7th game, tied 2-2 after nine innings. They play one more inning and it's still a tie. So they decide to determine the winner with a home run hitting contest.

Wait, it's the Superbowl. After a grueling four quarters, they play one OT, and the game is still tied. Instead of continuing to play, or playing with some sort of rule alteration. They decide to have the outcome determined by a punt, pass and kick competition.

7th game, NBA finals. After OT the game is tied 110-110. Instead of continuing to play, they have a free throw shooting contest to determine who wins.

The NHL used to have way too many shootouts. Now they limit them as fans hated them. They still do. So rules were implemented limiting players on the ice, and substitutions to speed up the game in OT. Sometimes down to 3 on 3. In the playoffs, there is no shootout. They play until someone wins.

I used to hate penalty kick finishes. But I've come to accept them as part of the sport. It's been, what, 17 years since Baggio's missed penalty, right? Remember that most of the time, there is no PK finish, as ties are an acceptable outcome. So it's unreasonable to expect the players to be able to play in such a way that they can continue on for hours, indefinitely, until someone scores: you have to call it off somewhere.

When you have a scoreless game like the 1994 Italy vs. Brazil (men), or the 1999 USA vs. China (women) it just feels wrong to finish it on kicks. But at least the two USA games in this world cup that ended in shootouts were back and forth and tied up late to send it to penalties and it seems a fitting end to the drama.

penalty kicks suck. sudden death or keep playing overtime until there is a clear winner. after a test of skill (regular time) make the game a test of endurance.

considering Fifa's lust for power n money, I'm surprised they don't schedule a replay - another sellout game, tv money, etc...
If no winner after the second final, then extra time, then penalties

i seem to remember hearing about a world cup many years ago that had a replay and they almost had a riot in the stadium.

a replay is a good idea, but for the customers who paid for a final game and get no result it is a bit tough to take.

you are right about fifa, too.

The US defenders were all over the place, horrendous defending at times. Japanese national football team programme is very good in both the mens and womens team.
