World Championship 2023: Men’s TT (August 10)

So 2023 first year U23 Joshua Tarling as a bronze medallist with 98,57% of the average speed of the winner vs. 2019 first year U23 Remco Evenepoel as a silver medallist with 98,26% of the average speed of the winner, who was more impressive?
You are comparing:
a 19-year old with a 23-year old in 2023 (so two riders <= 23 years old, 4-year difference)
a 19-year old with a 29-year old in 2019 (so two riders with a 10-year difference)

to make an argument about an U23 vs. an elite and a difference oof 0,31% of a time gap :tonguewink:

Right now, he literally is the best Time Trialist in the World. ;)
Hmm...not to spoil it to you and especially not to take credit from Remco, but I think there's a difference between being the TT World Champion and being the best Time Trialist in the World. The latter is much more comprehensive and excludes the fact that in the TT WC many riders are not present and/or fatigued due to the WRC.

He is....today. As I suspected after the RR, Ganna had some power to spare. The results show the damage done to the top riders that contested the RR to the finish IMO.
Remco did what he needed to do and, considering the PR pressure and political nonsense between his DS and "manager"; he demonstrated extremely professional focus. I think he's got a better grip on his potential now more than ever.
It'd be a good time to get a professional manager, too.

My intention was not to belittle Remco's race in 2019, was just because I think those were very similar performances and while silver is better than bronze, I think this year the field was more stacked than in 2019.

Only Remco and Abraham Olano have ever won both. (I think… )

Yes, this is indeed correct.

Only four riders have ever won both the road race and time trial across all categories with Olano and Remco being the only two to do so in the elite category:
  • Abraham Olano - 1995 Elite RR + 1998 Elite ITT
  • Evgeni Petrov - 2000 U23 RR + 2000 U23 ITT
  • Thor Hushovd - 2010 Elite RR + 1998 U23 ITT
  • Remco Evenepoel - 2018 Junior & 2022 Elite RR + 2018 Junior & 2023 Elite ITT

Didn’t he won his last 5 GT time trials or so? Even the last one in the Giro with Covid? He’s surely one of the best. I don’t think even Ganna has done that in his better TT years.

Wooah, Tadej got a bit humiliated today… Beaten by Gee and Mullen, and more than three minutes down. Surprising!…

He's clearly worn out. I hope he takes a solid break now, I see that he's on the provisional start list for Plouay, so I'm hoping that this and Il Lombardia are the only two race days left for him in 2023. He clearly needs a rest.

honestly, there is no discussion whatsoever that Remco is the best TT in the world this season.

I'm not even saying that there is a race that could settle who is the best time trialist in the world. Even if there was one, not every Time Trialist would excel there due to calendar, agenda, crashes, etc. But in the back of everyone's mind there is the impression that "if rider X could be there in the TT WC" or "if rider Y was not worned down"....."then...". That's why you always have to be skeptic with assertions like "Z is the best TT in the world".

He's won three Grand Tour time trials in a row, two in the Giro this year, and one in La Vuelta last year. Ganna won five in a row - all in the Giro - in 2020 and 2021.

If anything can be concluded: Tarling is a beast. This was (at least on paper) a stronger field than 2019. But we're comparing different parcours / distance etc. So hard to compare, but whatever what you were trying to say, I guess it was about Tarling being impressive and I totally agree!

he's the youngest TT world champion, very consistent, won about every TT this season he featured,...
What more can he do to convince you? Pay flight tickets to those that you feel are maybe better, so they dare to show up?
