World Championships 2024: Men's Road Race (September 29)

I like VdP but I'm not pulling for him to win Worlds anymore. The jersey deserves a better showing that just a few spring classics followed by months-long descent into mediocrity.
Yes, I agree. He was genuinely one of the worse world champions I have seen in a long time. There will be statistics or people who ought to value him highly due to two monument wins, but personally I favour consistency. You are world champion for an entire year, not a few weeks.

Tom Boonen had almost as many podiums (36) as Van der Poel had race days (39) in the rainbow jersey, pathetic.

The issue is if Pogacar wins we also won't see it, as it'll likely be behind leader's jerseys for much of the year (unless Vingegaard goes up another level).

Far more of a valid excuse than just now showing up at all. Van der Poel has just about as many wins (4) in the rainbow jersey as Remco (3), which should speak volumes as Remco was stuck in some sort of leader jersey virtually every race that wasn't a classic.

Only because my man Nans Peters hasn't been selected.
Laiguegila that year in some ways was the real world championship, 35 finishers, only the brave survived.

Some of my absolute main-est top of the range guys weren't selected either (Figueiredo, Mauri, Padun etc), but it isn't all bad, we will still get to watch the likes of Sainbayar, the Blessed and Most Holy Rien Schuurhuis and many of the other favourites in action, making it worth tuning in early as usual. Though I've just checked and it seems Charles Kagimu isn't starting, surely he should be given a special wildcard spot or something after his dominant display at the Olympics?

Not paticularly defending him but has ridden 14 cyclo cross races since the last road season ended either in the rainbow jersey or defending his title.

Very true, but racing for an hour against Niels Vandeputte and Thijs Aerts isn't going to put your season in jeopardy if you add a race between April and July. He has less race days than Vingegaard, who ended his season in August and had to be put together with tape and glue somewhere in April.
