And who of those, apart Sagan in 2016, had a better season then Van Der Poel this year?
The guy won two monuments for Christ's sake, handed third to a teammate, and in fourth he came 3rd against 10kg lighter competition on a very hilly course. He won a big classic in the process also, and came 2nd in another. And all that wins were achieved in spectacular manner, going solo from very far.
And you called this pathetic?!!! Man must wonder...
There will be statistics or people who ought to value him highly due to two monument wins, but personally I favour consistency. You are world champion for an entire year, not a few weeks. […] Tom Boonen had almost as many podiums (36) as Van der Poel had race days (39)

Does anyone know why Switzerland didn’t go with the 2020 course this year with the rescheduled event.

That course would have been phenomenal.
I believe that cities rather than countries bid: that course is not going to be promoted by the Zurich authorities.
yep, and Zürich 2024 was actually confirmed in 2019 already, so before Martigny was cancelled. It's not a (late) replacement, but an independent event.

But wasn't this a particular case where a whole country (Switzerland) was assigned the organization of the event and then cities had to bid?
A Swiss journalist was talking about it in a recent episode of the Cycling Podcast, he said both Zurich and Bern were keen on hosting the WC. Zurich won, partly because the city is trying to strength its image as a cycling destination.
It seemed to me rather unconventional and I can't find additional info either.

I would guess that the UCI don't want to have the WC in the same country twice in a short period under normal circumstances, which would have made a Bern bid de facto, if not de jure, in direct competition with the Zürich bid.

I didn't remember, but yeah, it seems like "Swiss Cycling" got the 2024 World Championships, and the decision between Bern and Zürich was made later on.

Martigny in 2020 was a relatively late replacement for Vicenza, and this article mentions that the Swiss made some demands because of that, a.o. a guarantee to host 2024 as well, and the permisson for their National Team to line up in the Tour de Suisse and -Romandie.

Mohoric isn't riding the WC RR anymore due to his injuries. That's a hard hit for Slovenia. So they have Novak and Tratnik to try and make it hard, which isn't enough really. Any 2nd tier rider that believes he can win, has to go early.

Who do Slovenia even have to replace him? Grega Bole?

Omrzel also had a bad crash a few weeks ago, ended up on deaths door.

Come on Spilak, this is your moment, comeback is on.
he will be replaced by someone called Matic Žumer

Obviously a big blow for Pogacar and the team. Motoric is a strong powerhouse who could help keep dangerous breaks on leash. And he would surely be devoted to help Pogacar 100%.

This is how I would rank the "years in the rainbow jersey" in this century: the year of the ruling world champion. Winning the world title again the next year doesn't count as part of the "rainbow campaign".

  1. Sagan '15-'16
  2. Van der Poel '23-'24
  3. Evenepoel '22-'23
  4. Boonen '05-'06
  5. Valverde '18-'19

Based on results or which races they rode? Because purely on results I would put Sagan higher than Evenepoel

This is gonne be a epic race. The two best riders supposedly in good form for the WC which is one of the pinnacles of the sport along with the X factor in MVDP which on his day is a superhuman and monster too.

I dont know more than the basic stuff about the route prefer it that way come sunday, but yeah this one gonne be a good one.
