He can pace himself as much as he likes and save energy.
The big question before this race was whether Evenepoel and others could live with Pog on this parcours. It was a prerequisite if people wanted a proper battle. The answer is no.

Had he waited the gap could have gone up or he could have been outplayed tactically by the other teams later.
He gambled but it was the perfect move and that Tratnik was in the break was perfect in the end.
Kept the gap while Belgians burned through Benoot, Wellens and Van Gils.
Second group syndrom with only leaders left behind.
Some help from Sivakov for a couple of laps.
Strong enough to pull it off solo on the front.
It is the perfect scenario playing out.

If this was a Sunday club race you’d be hailing the audacity of attacking solo from 100km out. To do it in the world championships against the best riders in the world is mind boggling.

I guess Sivakov gets deported to Russia after that disgraceful behaviour. A spineless mercenary who didn't have to guts to maximize his nation's (and much worse his own) chance of getting a Medal out of this situation.
