The word that I had tried to use started with a d and ended with an e and had an ouch in the middle.

I withdraw that characterization. I will restate... "dependent on the public largess".
How about the point? Has govt become too large in your view?
Alpe d'Huez said:Can't believe anyone thinks that teachers are "feeding at the public trough". To me that implies that public education should be eliminated in entirety. Or that teachers wages and benefits should be massively cut because they have it very easy.
Last I heard NPR's budget was only 2% federally funded. Should it be zero? I don't think so, but some may. But this is hardly feeding at the public trough.
With this logic people on Medicare and Medicaid are feeding at the public trough as well. Perhaps we should shut down all nursing homes, make those people take care of themselves so I can pay a little less in taxes.
It's already a sad world when people have to go to prison to get health care, while some people continue to make more money than they could possibly ever spend. What's next?

To answer your question. No government has not become too large it has become too beholden to the tiny population of the ultra rich who with full misguided support from that government are taking an ever larger share of the wealth.

Teachers feed at the public trough. Public employees feed at the public trough. Planned Parenthood, NPR and PBS all feed at the public trough.
Lots of formerly private companies now feed at the public trough.
Can you spot a problem here? Perhaps the public trough is larger than it should be.
Pass it on.

Laugh a little. It's ok.
What about police officers? Firefighters? Judges? Air traffic controllers? National Parks? The SEC? OSHA? NOAA? The military? Shouldn't they have to complete for a job also in the same way?Scott SoCal said:I think public education should have to compete for students in a marketplace where quality education is the outcome... not the goal. There will be teachers (in a system that I'd advocate) both public and private and they will be well compensated based on their merit. Kind of like how the rest of the world works.
If we're all feeding from the trough, why use such a negative light? Do you really think there should be essentially no government? Build your own roads, hire your own police kind of thing? The world would work better that way?I, too, am being fed from the public trough (which ties in with the point I was making).

It is not sustainable in the long run due to human nature and history has shown that. Civilization has gravitated long run to more socialistic models, not the opposite. Some of us realize that. I am purely a capitalist myself but I know there are boundaries that need to be maintained that will ultimately lead to better growth, and dog eat dog won't work long term. I know some things are left best to the govt instead of the free market. Your type of BS is only good for a small %, but they control the strings of the dolts and you happily spew the gospel.
There are 3 kinds of people that are yahoo about your political party, Scott. The ones trying to get over, the bigots, and the ones like yourself that actually believe the BS the ones trying to get over are shovelling. Useful idiots, the last 2 are.
No, I didn't feel like responding to your stock market rant a couple of weeks ago. That day I spent my time explaining physics 101 to my neighbor's cat. I found that to be a more productive use of my time.

Oh but somehow you just found the time to clear your calendar for this little pot stirring drive by.
You sound like you could use a cold one... and BTW, I don't really have a political party as I suspect you might not either.

By this assertion, the way I see it would be that people are inherently ruthless, motivated by money above all else. They are greedy and will destroy each other given the chance. Neighbors, co-workers, they are enemies. What's mine is mine no matter how I got it or who I hurt in the process, and if you don't like it, you'll have to forcefully take it from me.
What a wonderful world.
