As much as I want to see Freire win, do I want to see him in the stripes for a whole year? His last season showed he is only getting older, and was pretty underwhelming. Maybe that would change with new motivation, but I can't see him having the prominence of the most recent WCs

Freire is an awesome example of how to slink your way to a legendary palmares while not being obviously the best at anything physically.

A huge inspiration for how brains can overcome brawn.

this year may be one too far - but if Cav doesn't win then Cat would be my next pick - just can't see it

Freire is one of the best at long races that are heavy, but not too heavy. Perfect to win a lot of World Championships and Milano-San Remo's.

PS thanks to who posted the corrected profile ( Alano69?)

That is a flat profile - the way some posters are going on you would think this ends on the Mur - you might want to leave your sprint later than a 0.00% finish but the sprinters with legs should be there

(now finds out route is incomplete and profile of last KM is significant... )

Clearly. He is as cool as, well, a cat.

Freire's 99 title is pretty funny, look at him peel off the right side here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xeSAqd0qNA&feature=related
The second commentator can't help but laugh at the other riders, lol.

Sadly Vandenbroucke had the same injury there as Boonen has now. :(

And he still finished in the first group. Legend.

Freire is a beast as well though. Gold in 1999, bronze in 2000, gold in 2001 and gold again in 2004.

Is there anywhere in Melbourne (sports pub etc) one can watch the WCRR?
Dont want to rely on a stream.

thanks.

Its on every night next week on Eurosport Channell 511 on Foxtel/Austar.

Last part of Mens race is on SBS Sunday night from about 11pm, but from about 7pm on Eurosport.

Best to find someone with pay tv.

Just out of interest but how are sites like cyclingfever getting the names of riders for some of the more obscure riders? Can't seem to find announcements myself.

Lets talk about the real race, the U23 race where guys are not doping and race with heart and passion. I have seen some of these young kids race and they go fast (40km/h + for maybe 4 hours (in the flat)).

Without a real strong man like Ben King (US Pro Champion 2010) this race is wide open. Last year Ben was so strong he went for the win solo but did the last lap with a flat front tire and was taken back right at the line. This season who can make a win?

De Bie (BE)
Demar (FR)
Guardini (IT)
Dombrowski (US)

portuguese team was announced.

André Cardoso and Ricardo Mestre (Tavira-Prio), Manuel Cardoso and Nelson Oliveira (RadioShack), Filipe Cardoso (Barbot-Efapel) and Rui Costa (Movistar).

costa and oliveira for the itt.

not much portugal can do on this kind of route. maybe costa tries to attack somewhere and the other guys try to get into breaks. . . .

very weird that sergio ribeiro was selected. maybe he is out of form?

I will be cheering on Costa. Montreal proved that someone can topple Gilbert. Manuel Cardoso could be the protected rider for the sprint since he won the stage into Stirling at the TDU in 10 ( of course it's not indicative of everything??? TDU Haters ) All jks aside he could be a surprise on the sprint.

I would like Oscar to go well, going out in the rainbow jersey would be a dream.

Hushovd is looking better and better but i am wondering how Cav will be dropped. This circuit is not as hard as Geelong? and he will have a bigger team. He should win. It will take some serious attacking to drop him/ botched lead out for him to not win. Even harder racing will be required to drop EBH, Bennati, Sagan, Goss, Hushovd and Oscar. I have no idea how well Greipel shapes up for this, since he has not raced many classics ( due to Cav )

In a Belgian newspaper they called him Faria Costa instead of Rui Costa lol.

But don't count on that happening, Gilbert had no good team at the Canadian races. He'll have a super team here.

Though he won't have a team around him. Still, third place in Geelong last year means he'll be right up there this year.

Cav seems to be training pretty hard right now after he had to drop out of the Vuelta. He looks to be hard to beat if it comes down to a sprint.

Don't know about that, on the only thing resembling an uphill sprint he didn't do that great. But he certainly looks determined, which is 90% of what he needs to do well.

How about the U23 ITT?

I guess Durbride is the overwhelming favorite, with Hepburn his biggest rival.
Then we've got Quaade and Paillot, and next Mammini, Jungels, Krasilnikau, Novak, Laengen, Dumoulin and guys like Silvestre and Gawronski, though they won't be competing for the title.

Anyone I forgot? There's probably some I don't know that much about.

My guess:

1. Durbridge
2. Hepburn
3. Quaade
4. Paillot

He was doing 5 hour training rides befor the TOB and this week he's been putting in an average of 30km after the each stage.

Honestly I think he'll have a hard time on the final hill. It's 540 meters with 4% average or 578 meters with 3.7% average depending on which site you trust.

What are the most recent races which had a finish like this and included a lot of the top names?
