FIVE stars: Hushovd and Gilbert.

FOUR stars: Freire, Boasson Hagen.

THREE stars: Cavendish, Bennati, Visconti, Sagan,

TWO stars: Degenkolb, Kittel, Greipel, Farrar.

ONE star: Matt Goss.

And 'wild card' for a top six - the USA's Andrew Talansky.

I'd switch Cavendish with Matt Goss and put Greipel up to four stars.

What are they on? Srsly. Five star picks are ok, apart from that I disagree generally. For one thing, if Hushovd, Greipel, and Bennati are leading their respective countries, surely their helpers' chances are diminished dramatically

Actually they aren't that crazy, but Andrew Talansky? why even bother picking at outsider for the top six? Freire, Visconti and Boasson Hagen are high and Sagan low, IMO.

What has Sagan ever proved over such distances? In fact Sagan was totally useless when the road had uphill finishes at the Vuelta. The first stage of the Vuelta, won by Sutton, is similar to this road race.

After that horrible story regarding UCI's **** behaviour towards Eritrean rider Semere Menghis here is a bit of a "positive" follow up. His team mate Ferekalsi Debesay, who finished a respectabely 59th was supposed to have shared bikes with him. Yeah, they're so poor they had to be two riders for one bike and still the UCI thought they could afford changing the handlebar because it didn't meet some silly requirements. After it became clear that Debesay wouldn't have a bike to ride on Rolf Aldag had the decency to lend him one of Germany's spares.

And you probably knew this already...

The distance is what will be the biggest challenge for Sagan. Yes, Sagan underperformed in that stage of the Vuelta, but he has been largely dominant on finishes like this one. See Giro di Sardegna, Tour de Pologne, the second stage he won in Poland, and others. Also, there was a little bit more flat before the finish line in that stage than on this course.

I really don't see how anyone thinks Cavendish can win on such a sprint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjyZiQAETZM

I agree. The sprint does look to be too steep for him. However, he did show in the Tour stage that he won ahead of Gilbert that a hard sprint doesn't totally rule him out. He's just not the favourite IMO.

I think Sagan can handle the distance, but a much bigger problem is that he doesn't have a team.

Velits and Velits are listed on cyclingfever, they should be able to help.

Totally rubbish. Five stars are fine, but the rest no way. I dont think Cavendish is going to be a factor at the end, everyone is going to make the race way harder than it looks to try to drop Cav and other pure sprinters

Would someone who is Australian kindly drop the viewing times for this on Sunday locally. I need to know in advance whether I have to hit steephill up or find a pay tv venue showing this. I only ask because I'm not 100% sure who is broadcasting Down Under this year. SBS are too skint and Ten seem to not care it's not local this year. Either in the thread or PM me. Cheers and any reply would be appreciated

SBS is not as broke as you think. Live from 11:15 on Sunday for the Elite men. Anything else is streaming on cycling central or Eurosport on pay tv

Much as I would love Cav to win am just not convinced it is going to happen. he has a fairly large (compared to last year) and strong team to support him just think the distance and pressure from other teams will be too much.

I see several teams animating, couple of teams chasing back hard, and a Norwegian sneaking it at the line. Which one i am not sure.

What happens in the highly unlikely case of there being a dead heat? Do they both get to wear the jersey next year?

Quinziato IN and Belletti OUT...that's ridiculous...anyway let's wait and see...
Quinziato was always confirmed in the team. It's not ridiculous as Quinziato would be very handy to do work on the front as been in leadouts many times before riding for Bennati.

I never said anything about him not riding well. read what I wrote - Murphy was added late so I assumed a riders was injured as was pointed out the US had 8 riders and added Murphy late - nobody discussed if he deserved a spot or not.

defensive again :p

lol, i certainly wasn't being defensive. was just stating why he was put in as you seemed to be implying that it was due to an injury of another rider in the us team.
