Like all of you I was gutted when I heard the news this morning and have felt sick all day. Thanks for posting this topic to give all of us in the Cycling Community a chance to pay our respects, and offer our sincere condoences to the family and friends of Wouter.

He did not suffer is all that can be said.

The Giro is over for me.

RIP Wouter Weylandt.

RIP Wouter, another tragic day for cycling.

I wonder if the riders will decide to neutralize the stage after their minute's silence?

I'm touched by how the cycling community responds to this tragedy. Usually we see nothing but quarrels, but suddenly there is unity everywhere. It transcends the whole circus.

Same goes for our micro community. Most discussions have ended; posting has gone down to a minimum (except in this thread). Everybody is showing their support.

For me, this takes away a small portion of the numbness and pain.
Thanks.

Truly a sad day, all thoughts of racing are mute yet the Giro continues, if it's hard for us, most of us who never met Woulter, then imagine how hard it is for teammates, former teammates and those who raced with him to continue.

Of course the greatest loss is to his family, some of us will have lost someone so close and will know that the pain and despair can be unbearable.

Deepest condolences and our prayers to all those who have been touched by this sad loss, may they all recieve the support they need.

Yesterday on Holland Sport they had Rob Harmeling, Steven de Jongh and Kai Reus talking about it.

It was very respectful, but Reus (who nearly died in a crash a few years ago) was completely devestated.

If it's not geo-restricted you can watch it here: http://beta.uitzendinggemist.nl/afleveringen/1101511

In Dutch.

And here's a piece by Pedro Horrillo (In Dutch): http://www.rabosport.nl/wielrennen/nieuws/3496/Column_Pedro_Horrillo:_Wouter,_tot_ziens,_vriend.

It's translated from the Spanish piece on the El Pais site.

I'm probably not the one who is struggling to take this all in that Wouter Weylandt is no longer with us.

Interview with Kurt Hovelynck, friend, training partner.
Says Wouter once saved his life, when Kurt fell on a training ride...

Also speaks about his other friends Frederiek Nolf and Dimitri De Fauw, also both training partners...

If I understand correctly Hovelynck has ended his career immediately.
After losing 3 colleagues/friends in 3 years and coming close to death himself he thinks it's enough.

A very sad day for the sport of cycling. It brings to our mind that a lot of things in life can change in an instant. I am using a quote by Chuck Palahniuk which seems appropriate at this moment.

“You can shed tears that he is gone,
or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all he's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him only that he is gone,
or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what he'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.”

Wouter Weylandt : You will never die but live forever in our hearts with the memories like the 3rd stage of the Giro last year. May you rest in peace and may your family, friends and colleague find the strength to go ahead.

Unbelievable and saddens me to the core. I heard about this yesterday but reading things this morning it is just shocking that Wouter Weylandt will not race today and take the start line.
