I'm an Athletic Trainer. Currently unemployed, but working on it. I worked for the WWE for 3 years and got to travel all over the world. After I got laid off, I moved to Mexico City from the US. I worked with the Sub17 Mexico National Soccer Team in the fall and went to the World Cup with them. Riding in Mexcio City kind of blows. Not many places to ride and it just isn't safe.

I'm in healthcare in Canada. It gets a bit complicated to describe the different roles I have, so I'll just leave it there ... :D

For some reason I always thought you were English. A thousand apologies dear Sir! Mind you I have met plenty of yanks on my travels through Europe and a lot of them think I'm Irish (never been to Ireland), or even English.

No problem! The irony is that I know several Canadians who think they're more English than the English :p

PS - might I ask why? (just curious)

Ah hell, I'll go one up on him and say I thought you were from the middle half of North America.

And your username...I missed that one entirely. Although I do appreciate the reasoning behind it :D, I thought it was for the more recognizable reason that you have been known to rip a few folks wide open on this forum...meant with no disrespect whatsoever :)

I am a self-confessed classic "professional" underachiever who does quite well financially. So, I'm not complaining.

Maybe it was your username that for some reason made me think that you're English.

i organize labour unions.

don't get why pro riders don't have one.

They've had one for 11 years - the CPA. The Objects under their Constitution are (see also http://www.cpasite.org/templates/BUILTIN-NOFRAMES/Template3/layout.asp?MenuId=Mzc3Mg:

"The main objective which the CPA set itself is the defense and the improvement of riders' status

- to be involved, in the same capacity as the AIOCC and AIGCP, in works and decisions taken by the UCI

- to have permanent representatives in the main UCI commissions and on the UCI ProTour Council (CUPT)

- to co-ordinate all actions of national associations and act as an intermediary in the event of problems which go beyond national boundaries

- to divulge a better image of riders in the fight against doping. For several years, 2% of all prize money is given as a contribution from riders against the fight against doping. It is important to know that this situation does not exist in any other sport

- to establish a reliable working relationship between riders and their employers and fix minimum salaries as well as social cover relating to the risks of their job

- to improve riders' relationships with all other parties involved in professional cycling

- to maintain rider's rights with other bodies, when carrying out their profession"

Mechanical engineer and a graduate student in electro-optics which should lead to a Phd in common sense. When I have time, I ride long miles, train for marathons and build mini baja cars. I also lead a double life blogging which initially started as an experiment to improve my written English.

The objectives of the CPA seem praiseworthy; but their stated goals are not contained in a legally binding collective agreement.
Until then, the riders are not unionized.

Hi TD, I suspect you and I have different definitions of unionised. I'm not going to quibble with your meaning in your jurisdiction given that you are an expert, but we may come from different jurisdictions where it means something different.

I am guessing from your user name you are from the UK (the home of the band of the same name), although you spell unionised with a "z" so perhaps you are from the US or Canada. Either way, in my country, we have a statutory definition of union as well as a protean one, the later of which would be broad enough to capture the CPA model. I can't be bothered checking ours under our (ahem) "Fair" Work Act, but I suspect it is also very broad.
