I'm now overworked and I barely have any time to ride. I get three days off and I'm fatigued. And when I try to ride I have no power whatsoever.

Enjoy your retirement :)

Now you have no excuse not to ride.

Thanks for the good wishes :)

Alas I retired early due to health issues and am on very light activity only. However when we get this cleared up there will be plenty of time!

Best,

Carol

Hi Lazaili:

I'm from Canada (Toronto), where there are several labour associations similar to the CPA.

Obviously I'm not an expert, otherwise I'd be able to tell you if they're recognized by the Labour Board as a union.

All I know is that I ask the following to those I encounter who claim to have a union:

Do you negotiate a legally binding contract with management?
Do you vote for that contract?
Do you have the ability to file grievances and take those grievances to an arbitrator?

If the answer is no, then they don't have a union.

I was a professional cyclist at one time (never was Pro Tour, but did do some big races in Belgium). Enjoyed the beer here in Belgium and stayed.

These days I run a cycling house in belgium, The Chain Stay and a cycling tour company, Chainring Tours. When I find the time I try to get out and do a bit of freelance photography and writing.

Join the party. I feel for you man. As soon as I took up medicine at Uni I said goodbye to the bike. Haven't done much on the bike for over a decade now. That doesn't look like it will change anytime soon. Although, I might take a few years off sometime in the next decade to go around Europe and ride.

You need to work hard to be the best you can. You have to. The last thing you want to do is screw up a surgical procedure.

I am not sure how far along in your career you are, but you also need to find balance in your life. If you don't, you will be messed up and not know where you are or what you are doing. Its no good putting things off for 7-8 years. That's 10% of your life, man! How can I say these things? I am a surgical oncologist, I take 6 weeks vacation a year, I ride my bike approximately 6000 km a year, and I try to enjoy every day and every year. But I have also been where you are and I have paid the price. I now try to make it a habit to prioritize my quality of life and happiness. I am a better surgeon because of it, and I am a better person because of it (I hope).

Gotta agree with elapid...I am not in medicine..I am a PhD biochemist/microbiologist. I put everything into my education, even though I was married with kids. 24/7 all I did was study, read, and lab research. It was tough on both me and the family. About 7 years ago, I said...enough!! Now my motto is that I work to live and not live to work! My family is everything now. I still give everything I have when I am in the lab, but when I go home...I am home. Elapid said it perfectly...

By the way elapid...when I was younger I bred white lipped pythons (they were the meanest and quickest SOBs I have ever seen) and rainbow boas. The rainbows were just the opposite!! Such sweet animals...I lost my last one to old age about 2 years ago. Never did keep elapids...but I always found eyelash vipers to be the most beautiful little ******s!!

Very cool. I rented a bike last year from Ronny Assez at his shop in Oudenaard. Sounds like you would know him.

Are you organizing a group ride on the Friday before Paris-Roubaix?

Very cool Greg...when were you there? I raced primarily in the Netherlands, but some in Belgium in the late 80's. Is it possible we chewed some of the same dirt at the same time?

Elapid has also commented on this, and well. I am not saying hard (and smart) work is not necessary, I am saying that medicine is infamous for overdoing it and creating individuals with no balance in their lives. There are other, equally effective ways to ensure someone will 'be the best' without the process that medicine (or should I say Med School) often creates.

Not likely as I was born in '81! ... I raced from 2002 till 2007 in Belgium.

I know Ronny well (we raced together my first year of Flanders and his last). This year I am working in my free time as a mechanic/second director of the ASFRA racing team. I seem to like to wear to many 'hats', but as long as they are in the cycling world I happy enough!

That we are ... it's part of our Spring Classics tour, but there are a couple of places left if anyone's interested. E-mail or PM for details.
