Youth CQ Ranking Game 2019

Youth CQ Ranking Game 2019

Ciao fellow CN Forumites, welcome to the seventh annual Youth CQ Ranking Manager Game. This game allows you to showcase your knowledge of upcoming youngsters, and hopefully take a gamble on a couple of really young riders.
Originally this game was invented by mc_mountain, based on Hugo Koblet's CQ Ranking Manager Game, but I am organizing it this year.

Your task is to create a team with 12-15 riders at 1000 CQ points to get the best possible return.

1. How the game works

1.1. Duration
The season starts when the first race is held (Australian Road Cycling Championships 6 January 2019) and ends when the last major race (.1 or higher) is held. The winner will be crowned when the next update after the last major race (x.1) is out - submissions can be made to extend the season to include late season smaller races, should there be potential for them to affect the top placings. A victor can be declared earlier if there is no prospect of the leader being overhauled.

1.2. Updates
My aim is to have an update every 2 weeks. I would greatly appreciate some help from other participants. If you are interested in doing an update every now and then, let me know via PM!

2. On doping
Hopefully doping will have much less of an impact on this game, but the Main game rules will apply.

3.Submitting your team

3.1. How do I?
You pick between 12 and 15 riders whose combined value doesn’t exceed 1000 points and submit your team to me via PM (either on CN forum or on Velorooms forum). Please be sure to use the naming format as found on cqranking.com and only send me your riders' names, not their scores etc. Please also be wary of any spaces or other characters after your riders’ names. I will try to correct all mistakes but some could slip through.

Example of how to send in your team:
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
DE PLUS Laurens
MAMYKIN Matvey
etc...

3.2. Eligibility
Riders need to fit one of the following two main criteria
i) be a first year professional rider (of any age), be it at World Tour or Professional Continental team.
ii) be riding at Continental level or lower, born in 1994 or younger, without having previously ridden as a professional.

For clarity, riders should not have already ridden a full year as a professional at either World Tour or Professional Continental level – riding as a stagiaire does not prevent selection. Riders who have signed their first pro contract in August (or later), are considered for the purposes of this game as no different from stagiaire riders.

If you are unsure about the eligibility of a rider, feel free to PM me.

In previous years, the rules included an “encouragement” to include riders from several age categories, this encouragement has been scrapped to avoid any confusion.

Deadline
You can submit your team as of right now. The deadline for submission is January 4th, at noon i.e. 12:00 CET(http://www.timebie.com/timelocal/centraleuropean.php) so 12 hours after the main game deadline.
After this deadline, team submissions will no longer be accepted. I will then process all teams, which includes checking eligibility. If I encounter an issue with your team, e.g. you've included the same rider twice, you are over budget or a rider you selected is not eligible, I will contact you via PM and give you the opportunity to correct the mistake before January 5th 20:00 CET. If after this deadline, you haven't yet gotten back to me, or there is still an issue with your team, I will:
i) in case you are over the budget, remove a rider to bring you under the budget. This will be the cheapest available rider on your team whose removal will bring you to or under the budget;
ii) in case you selected too many riders, remove the cheapest available rider from your team;
iii) in case of ineligibility, remove the ineligible rider.

I would like to ask the participants to delay the big reveal of their teams until after the January 5th deadline.

Best of luck to all! :)

My team is ready and will be sent to the first entrant!
Edit: comodoro is the first participant and has received my team!

I am over 1.000 points after 4 guys. Maybe i'm doing it wrong.
There seem to be quite a few viable expensive options this year. I'm trying to think if a very expensive pick ever truly paid off. Seems the best picks are generally in the 50-100 range, equally weighing profit in % and in absolute numbers.

Most expensive pick ever was Timothy Dupont by Squire 2 years ago. 915 points

I believe that Remco Evenepoel should also be declared ineligible :D

"You pick Remco Evenepoel plus between 11 and 14 riders whose combined value doesn’t exceed 1000 points"

  Well I included a friend who just aged out of the Junior ranks and will be on a bran new U-23 team next year. But as he's a friend I had to include him even if he doesn't get any points.

So the official deadline has arrived and we have 30 teams entered, plus two more revised teams to come. The revision deadline is 20:00 CET tomorrow, but in the meantime I might accept some more entrants at my discretion, it'd be cool to get a couple more teams in. So if you're still interested, hesitate no more and throw together a team!

Please check if your team is on the list in the 2nd post

Please, folks, Sasha Weemaes is NOT eligible!! He signed a contract in July 2018. I don't know what changed because the first team to include him came in less than 2 days ago and now every other team seems to include him.

Also, TheArt, Karaev1, get back to me as soon as you can!

Good news! All teams are in! :)

So we can reveal our teams now, I'll start:

STANNARD Robert
MOSCHETTI Matteo
TILLER Rasmus Fossum
DEWULF Stan
ROCHAS Rémy
BATTISTELLA Samuele
HONORE Mikkel Frølich
TANFIELD Harry
DE BOD Stefan
LONARDI Giovanni
AFFINI Edoardo
COVI Alessandro
SCOTSON Callum
EVENEPOEL Remco
GAZZOLI Michele

Tomorrow I'll share the spreadsheet and popularity data

Here's my youth team. No clue if it will be very good or not, but it's an attempt.

VAN DER POEL Mathieu
REYNAERTS Jan
SEVILLA LOPEZ Diego Pablo
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro
IDJOUADIENE Pierre
BARBIER Pierre
VAN DEN BERG Marijn
EVENEPOEL Remco
AALRUST Haakon Lunder
MAGENNIS Liam
HERNANDEZ Michael
MARTIN SANZ Gotzon
HOLLMANN Juri
SÁNCHEZ PALAZÓN Javier
KLARIS Magnus Bak

Javi is a friend, so I included him even if I have no idea if he'll even race any races that qualify as he's on a bran new U-23/elite team. The only races they know for sure they will be competing in are the Spanish U-23 races. They are hoping for some other invites, but have no idea if they will get invites to any other races.

My team:

VAN DER POEL Mathieu - 539 - Expensive in the format but huge potential to improve and with many top u23 riders having scored quite well (like Pogacar, Mäder, Hirschi and so on) I think they will have a harder time to improve and then he also made room for many good cheap picks

MOSCHETTI Matteo - 144 - Im not sure he is as talented as some thinks and also I doubt he will do much in 1-day races next year where sprinters have to score to get many points. Dainese, Lonardi and so on also seems quicker. But still a solid pick at the price with his teamrole. I did also considder him for the main game but cut him in the end there

DE DECKER Alfdan - 76 - Solid sprinter, should be a good solid pick

HÄNNINEN Jaakko - 48 - Hard not to pick him after the way he ended his season. Hopefully he is not a new Vastaranta.

LONARDI Giovanni - 44 - Obvious pick as a very talented sprinter with access to easy asian points with Nippo

BOUCHARD Geoffrey - 42 - Obvious pick I think, winner of the french amateur rankings in style and could well have a Calmejane-kind of debut-pro-season with the advantage of being older than normal neopros

MARCHETTI Moreno - 33 - Another talented sprinter that should get some points, and I think the new 1. sprinter on Willier taking over for Mareczko, on paper very obvious but still one of my last picks

NIEUWENHUIS Joris - 21 - A bit of a joker, not sure how much he will ride on the road and what he can do, but you never know with that kind of rider and the points fitted in the end as the last pick

OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro - 17 - Cheap columbian climbing talent, with great potential, hard not to pick

COVI Alessandro - 15 -Very talented rider at a very low cost, obvious pick

MUÑOZ LANCHEROS Cristian Camilo -13- Another cheap columbian climbing talent, with great potential, hard not to pick

DE KLEIJN Arvid - 5 - most obvious pick at the price back after injury

FERASSE Thibault - 2- Very solid pick at low price

EVENEPOEL Remco - 0 - Obvious

BYRIEL IVERSEN Rasmus - 0 - Only Lonardi had more wins in the Italian amateurscene last year, so a very interesting allrounder. Might not get his own chances that much next year but should get some points with his winnerinstict, and free

I'm choosing very young people this year. I choose the future :D

361 POGACAR Tadej
200 KANTER Max
172 STANNARD Robert
165 STOKBRO Andreas
101 DEWULF Stan
0 EVENEPOEL Remco
0 VACEK Karel
0 VAN WILDER Ilan
0 MAYRHOFER Marius
0 BALMER Alexandre
0 WAERENSKJOLD Soren
0 AASHEIM Ludvig
0 GHIRMAY Biniyam
0 VERVLOESEM Xandres
0 HINDSGAUL Jacob

LaFlorecita, thanks for organizing this game.
It's my first participation in a game of this forum.
I decided not to have specialists in the TT (Stefan de Bod or Edoardo Affini) and only one on Northern Classics.

Here is my team:
MÄDER Gino
TOUZE Damien
VILLALOBOS HERNANDEZ Luis Ricardo
FOSS Tobias Svendsen
DAINESE Alberto
JERMAN Ziga
ARENSMAN Thymen
LONARDI Giovanni
DONOVAN Mark
STEWART Jake
OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro
MUÑOZ LANCHEROS Cristian Camilo
PEKALA Piotr
LAVRIC Martin

My team, I like it but I'm not too convinced it's a very good one year one:

ARENSMAN Thymen
BARBIER Pierre
CHAMPOUSSIN Clément
DE KLEIJN Arvid
EVENEPOEL Remco
GALL Felix
HONORE Mikkel Frølich
ISERBYT Eli
JOHANSEN Julius
KANTER Max
NIEUWENHUIS Joris
PIDCOCK Thomas
THIJSSEN Gerben
TOUZE Damien
VACEK Karel

The first two riders take up 90% of my budget. Probably not a good idea, but what the heck. I have been reasonable at the CQ game, not picking favorites of mine like Ciccone and Pogi who are unlikely to gain lots of points. Here i am unreasonable and i like it.

VAN DER POEL Mathieu
POGACAR Tadej
CAÑELLAS SANCHEZ Xavier
PRICE-PEJTERSEN Johan
OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro
MUÑOZ LANCHEROS Cristian Camilo
MÄRKL Niklas
FEDRIGO Leonardo
MUÑOZ GIRALDO Daniel Felipe
BYRIEL IVERSEN Rasmus
EVENEPOEL Remco
JIMENEZ MARTINEZ Luis Fernando
SUREDA MOREY Jaume
VACEK Karel
WAERENSKJOLD Soren
