One of my favorite races on the calendar, a great route and an exciting field to look forward to. Lots of big names and young talent. Personally looking forward to see how Ivan Sosa will do.

Really looking forward to this race, with the best startlist ever maybe. Froome vs. Aru vs. Pinot vs. MAL vs. Pozzovivo for the second place. The great Amaro Antunes for the obvious win.

The climbs in this edition are wet farts. This route seems to be descent-heavy and the descents they've chosen look quite demanding. Plenty of 9-10% hidden in them.

Folgaria
Serrada is a visually stunning climb with a quite large backdrop in the first half but as a climb it's nothing amazing. At least they could use Sommo (it would be an MTF then). It's way harder than Serrada.

Pampeago
The stage to Pampeago is... weird. For some reason it does an almost flat lap in Val di Fiemme. it's basically a Vuelta-esque murito finish. Sad, as Val di Fiemme has plenty of ore interesting places to choose and Pampeago itself can be reinforced. I guess it's a weather affected decision but Pampeago itself is nothing amazing.

Merano
And from here starts the descent-focused triptique. First is Merano after Mendola and Palade. Mendola is a 7% grind, which did some damage in 2016, but chances of repeating it are quite slim imo. Especially as Palade south is just a long false-flat. The descent to Merano is quite tricky though and if it's wet, then you can do some damage as i guess the majority of GC guys will be content to not risk any injuries before Giro. I may like this approach if there are some local guys capable of going for GC while not thinking much about Giro.

Lienz
Lienz is similar to Merano. The climb to Bannberg from this side is nothing amazing. First 1,5km are at 10% (max 12%) but the rest is much easier. It may be enough for someone to try for a successful push, but considering the easier last kms i guess it'll be about the descent, which is very steep (5km at 10,5% with an entire 1km at 12,5%) and with some amount of turns. I don't know, how wide the descent is though.

Descent:

Innsbruck
Because of the laps in Innsbruck at least there's some climbing before the last climb... which is also nothing great. Once again the descent seems to be quite steep and there also seems to be a small part over some sort of a gorge. The road is quite wide though. It looks like a similar tale to Lienz.

How do i rate this race? I guess focusing on descents in a mainly preparatory race could be potentialy interesting. I guess the GC will be won either on Serrada/Pampeago unless someone want's to test his skills.

Anyway, I like the route, although some stages could be a bit longer. And ofc I'm still waiting for a proper mountain stage in Austria despite this being a half Austrian race for the 2nd year.

Anyway, I like the route, although some stages could be a bit longer. And ofc I'm still waiting for a proper mountain stage in Austria despite this being a half Austrian race for the 2nd year.

I have a feeling that objectively it's a horrible route but it may benefit from it being a prep race in some scenarios. I don't know if (just!) Serrada and Pampeago are enough for Froome to kill the race. I hope that these quite lacklustre climbs won't generate much which will give those descent stages a lil' bit of oomph. I don't think Froome and majority of other GC guys, who are targeting Giro will go daredevil on the descents and with these gradients some outsider may try to do some damage (they could be a ll' bit more technical though). The lesser impact first 2 stages have then i guess the better chances for an outsider to try and win it.

What i would like to see is (if the weather will help) combo of Silzer Sattel (roughly 10km at 10% with 5km at 11,5%) followed by Kühtai Sattel (a more irregular Aprica-type climb). Maybe throw in (if it's not too far away) Pillerhöhe (7,5km at 9,5%) before that. It's not amazing as there's quite a lot of ground between the top of Kühtai and Innsbruck (majority of it is a descent) but it's just something i would like to see.

Below is a mock-up of a potential stage i've mentioned above. I've used TdF categorisation for comparison. I've counted only the 12% ramp for the first climb. The stage uses only the last roughly 8km of Kühtai Sattel.

It's half Tyrolian, not half Austrian.
It looks like I won't be able to watch the race on the road, that sucks a bit.
Last year I was there at the start of stage 3, i saw all the big names and talked with Pozzoviv (and Warbasse) before the start.
Scarponi was standing 2-3m away from me and 3 days later he was gone.

Cunego faded after Varese 2008. He did something until 2011, then stopped being relevant.

Cunego won 2 stages at the 2009 Vuelta in impressive fashion and would've finished inside the top 10 in front of a certain Richie Porte at the 2010 Giro if not for that 15 minutes breakaway. This kicked of some little resurrection, as the little prince nearly won the 2011 Tour of Switzerland and was very prominent at the 2012 Giro where Cunego in fact was the most aggressive favorite. It was after 2012 where his performance wouldn't fluctuate anymore but become quite average. Although he looked surprisingly strong in the first mountain stages of the 2015 Giro before he fell ill. In 2016 however his climbing was pretty mediocre at beste and once Nieve set his sights on the mountains jersey, Cunego was without chance. Although that was only on the Cima Coppi were Sky played their power to reel back in Cunego. But he won way too little points in the Dolomites, because he couldn't stay off the front for longer.

I don't see Cunego being much of a factor here tbh. I expect him to go for the KOM classification at the Tour of Switzerland later this year.

The Giro win at such a young age will always viewed in many different ways ! And he was great in the Ardennes races for a few seasons as well but once his FORM went over the cliff he never did much. To be fair he also had a lot of bad luck with crashes in the second half of his career, some pretty bad. To me he was more of a hill specialist than a GT rider but the record books show his Giro win ! Also some great performances in the TDS. Gutsy ride in the 2011 Tour after his glory days were over.

That's good, I'm very pleased with that as it would be way too early. However, after his victory in Tachira, Rivera himself revealed he would be going. Did Savio change his mind?

I know everyone hates the new name, but I think people should get over it and call the race like it's called. The race isn't a race completely taking place in trentino anymore so of course the name was changed, and although tour of the alps isn't a great name, still using the old name and refusing to use the new one is just childish. If Paris Nice gets a new finish in Monaco and gets renamed Paris-Monaco would you still call it Paris-Nice?
