What the f are you banging on about? He had a rubbish prep to the Tour, with a crash in the Dauphiné, a week rest after, pain after that, only just before the Tour without pain. Traditionally he is strongest in the third week, would be more so this year.

I just choose not to assume he would have got better and better, because there was no evidence of it in his Tour performance yet, and it was already too late for him. Anyone who thinks he was going to be within 4 minutes of the lead and in a position to limit those losses further by Monday night is in a dream land. His Tour was over at the Dauphine.

After the Dauphine yes, his chances decreased greatly. A slightly inferior rider like Nibali therefore, with better prep has a better chance in such a situation.

Dave Brailsford was saying earlier on that Sky were happy to lose the yellow jersey today as long as it wasnt to someone who was a threat to the final GC.

He would probably lose 2 minutes in the TT. And there is no proof he wouldn't get better, as he's always done so, in his whole career. Then, anything is possible, Wiggins may crack, who knows. Sanchez has way better and more consistent GC results in grand tours, so it isn't even a little bit weird to write him off compared to Wiggins.
