Matthews has really become a great allrounder. He can do it all. Although the field is not World class, there are some solid time trialist in the race.
It sure looks like Ulissi and Machado are the main favourites now. But don't sleep on Koren. He is in good form and the final climb on stage 3 isn't that steep in the last kilometers. Still it will be difficult for him to hang on. There are others that lost some time but are very capable to do well on the climbs, so expect them to attack.
Oh and Papi Horner returned from his injury. He was 68th today, 43s down.

Tomorrow is an unpredictable stage that could end in a sprint from a small group of 40-50 riders, maybe less or even more, depends on the tempo set on the last climb which is pretty difficult (8km at 8%). There should be attacks on the climb and if a strong group of favourites takes form, they could survive till the finish although the top is more than 35km from the line.

Not unknown for strong sprinters to be capable of good prologues which, in essence, this was. Matthews has always been capable of a good TT but his generation coming through AUS junior ranks was stacked with first rate TTers (Durbridge, Dennis, Hepburn). Will be interesting to see how his season advances and whether he may look for a slot in OGE's TTT for the Worlds (although competition will be tough given the team's depth in strong TTers and the prestige the team puts on this discipline).

Still around 80km to go. 4 riders in the break: Tonin, Sella, Cecchinel, Firsanov. They have 3 minutes on the peloton. There is a possibility of thunderstorms and rain along the way.

So, today is the queen stage of the tour and today we will know the final classification as the last stage tomorrow will be one for the sprinters.
This is a really nice stage, especially in the last 75km where there's very little flat. All will be decided on the final climb, of course. The climb to Trije Kralji (three kings) is about 15,5km long with an average gradient of 6%. But it is a very irregular climb with some flatish sections at 5km to the top. Still there are enough steeper parts to make a good selection. I really don't know who has the best chance to win, but if I had to pick one name I'll take Ulissi. On the other hand I hope Slovenian riders will do well.

Perfect finish for Yates - nice test of where he is post crash. All 3 days he's raced coming back so far have been right where he should be.
