Yeah I guess the only interesting thing of the presentation will be the starting town of the stage

Maybe the finish won't be in Madonna di Campiglio but somewhere in the vicinity. Wouldn't know where, though.

I figured I'd look for the profile of Madonna di Campiglio after all the mentions in this thread, have to say, I was pretty disappointed.

Don't know the history of the climb and how well it connects with other mountains though

it is indeed nothing special. And it connects badly with other climbs. The best option, which is btw the one rumoured, would be this, with Passo Durone and the very interesting Passo Daone (8.3 kms at 9.2%)
The history is what makes it special (in a very depressing way, as the memories there are horrible)

What's with the history of the climb? Was it after that stage that Pantani got pulled out of the Giro in '99?

I've read somewhere that it was one of the not very challenging MTFs frequently used during the Moser and Saronni years. Is that true?

I kinda hate that they're tributing everything to Pantani in the last couple of years, they want to visit every place where Pantani ever took a ****

according to that, the ITT will be from Treviso to Valdobbiadene, but it will be on stage 13, while on stage 12 there'll be a stage to Jesolo. That means that the very promising (on paper) stage to Nervesa della Battaglia has been ruled out  they also confirm Plan the Corones.
In the last part of the article they mention the rumoured route, which is more or less the same as mine, besides a few differences/improvements:
- stage 9 will finish in Termoli
- stage 7 will finish in Torre del Greco
- stage 17 will start from Sondrio
- stage 20 will start from Ivrea

PS: the stage to Vicenza will actually be a very short uphill sprint to the church of Madonna di Monte Berico.

Mortirolo, Finestre and Plan de Corones in the same race

Tirano is 50k from the summit of Mortirolo. How far away from Mortirolo would a potential stage 16 MTF be?

if the finish is in Forte Sertoli as rumoured, the top of Mortirolo would end up between 50-70 kms to the finish, depending on the option they choose. Needless to say, there are very good ones and very dull ones.

I fear that 70 k from the finish might be too far for Mortirolo to decisively break the race apart

there's no need to break it there if they choose the right option ;)
but yes, it'll be unlikely with today's cycling. As always.

Pantani beat everyone by a minute in 1999.

Yeah, he attacked with 5 km to go and arrived with 1:07 advantage. Campiglio is a climb with 5.6 % average gradient. Last 2 km are at 2 - 3,5 %.

Cassani stopped the time Pantani did from - 3 km to - 2 km. 2:08 min with that km between 6 and 7 %. 28-29 Km/h. Incredible to watch.
Gained a minute on everybody until 1 km to go. Penultimate km which has around 3 % he did at 37 km/h.
Nobody expected him to attack looking at the profile of the climb and saw Jalabert as the favorite. Imagine what he would have done the day after on Mortirolo

Noale seems to be a long way south to start a stage to Plan de Corones. Not much room for climbs before the MTF.
Yeah probably just the Falzarego or hopefully the Giau.
