Nibali can put as many team mates in the break as he likes, if he cant drop Kruijswijk it wont matter.
It can matter if Valverde and Zakarin can't follow.

Podium is the least of nibali's concern, a stage win is way more important for him.

Astana might try to set up a relay, but no GC contender will be willing and able to drop Kruijswijk on the Agnello. It'll be a real war of attrition though with riders all over the place by the top. There will be a slight regroupment on the descent with around 30 riders chasing a couple of escapees. From here it's a question of strength and by half way up only the very best half a dozen riders will remain. Kruijswijk, Zakharin and Chaves will be to the fore.

A black horse: Uran was in better shape today, maybe he'll do another final weekend recovery.

ok epic nerds, i need to know when was valverde's last super ride on a 2000m+ mountain.
this is why i also doubt zakarin, to be honest

again, i think only astana can attack on agnello. because if a leader goes there, he needs to send strong teamates in the breakaway to wait and help...
Valverde was slightly dropped in the loop from the Col around the Cime de la Bonette 2008, which they don't this year :p

Doing nothing will tarnish Nibali more than suicide attempt + epic blow up, so I hope he'll go for the latter.

Also, if Nibali goes on the descent, there's the only chance for Valverde and Chaves to go with Nibali then, and drop Kruijswijk on the descent.

Didn't looked that way in the last years Tour, he was really disappointed when he was dropped at Alpe D'Huez

Astana and Movi to go all out on the Agnello and isolate Kruijswijk. Then Nibali attacks on the final kilometer of the climb and get a good advantage on the descent before he joins his teammates who were up in front. Kruijswijk chases on his own for the whole 40 kilometers between the top of Agnello and the start of Rissoul and then can't follow Chaves and Valverde who attack on the first kilometers of the mtf and gain 2 minutes on Kruijswijk and almost catch Nibali again who gets a heroic stage win a bit like in La Toussuire in the tdf last year.

Amen, brother.

I'm not convinced by Kruijswijk's descending - Nibali Valverde and Chavez have opened a gap on him more than once during this Giro, and I strongly expect him to be able to gap SK.

Whether he can keep the gap on the final climb to Risoul without blowing up is another question

I have very high hopes for tomorrow's stage

No one will be able gap each other on this descent. Maybe if Nibali gets a gap before the descent starts he might be able to extend his lead on the descent, but it's highly unlikely. Looking at the map it's mostly straight, very few hairpins.

Isn't the Agnello decent just a typical fast alpine descent? Not sure it's the kind of descent where you can gap people.

If I remember correctly, yes; I don't think I remember it as overly technical.

So much talk about descents this Giro. Especially with Nibali involved.

Surprise surprise, nothing has come from descents so far.

Well, I think it's mainly wishful thinking as one of the most popular riders, Nibali, doesn't seem able to do anything on the ascents, so people turn to one of his other qualities, descents, and hope for the best; I can't blame them, it would liven up the race.

Re: 2016 Giro d'Italia, Stage 19: Pinerolo - Risoul (162 km

There will be crazy pace set up by Katusha on Agnello. Valverde will be dropped 6km from the top. Group of 10 riders will remain at the front. Chaves will drop back to Valverde group because after all attacks on a first climb are a reason to preserve energy. Fuglsang will set the pace on the downhill, somehow dropping Zakarin, Firsanov, and Foliforonow. Group of 7 contenders will begin Risoul together and then will be passed by the Russian trio 5km from the finish with same pace difference as between Trenton and Brambilla yesterday
