Funny looking at Froome and Quintana staring at each other on the little flat section. Froome probably thinking he is in the box seat with the ITT ahead. Quintana thinking he has the upper hand as he is in red.

The duel is now on. Nairo knows he needs to gain time on Froome in the high mountains, but those are a different kettle of fish to Pena Cabarga. They both know that they've got the upper hand on everybody else, but don't know whether they've got the upper hand on their main rival.

2016:5,9 km@9,3%---16:58---average speed 20.86 km/h(Froome-Quintana)
2013:5,9 km@9,3%---16:42---average speed 21.20 km/h(Chris Horner)-RECORD
2011:5,9 km@9,3%---17:15---average speed 20.52 km/h(Christopher Froome)
2010:5,9 km@9,3%---17:01---average speed 20.80 km/h(Joaquim Rodriguez)
lol, Horner's time is absurd. Coming in the 3rd week of a brutal tour, and at the end of a tough mountain stage, not a flat one like today.

Contador is going to have to accept the harsh truth that he is no longer even competitive with the Big 2 and plan the rest of the Vuelta, and next season, accordingly.

Going head to head with Nairo up the Lagos de Covadongawas showed glimpses of the Alberto of 'old' - but sadly it proved only the most fleeting visit. He probably needs to accept the 'old' Albert is now gone for good - as he simply cannot hold his own any longer over three weeks against the two big boys who now sit atop the GC hill - and set next season out accordingly.

It's also dependable on how they rode the first couple of km's of Pena Cabarga. I remember that Purito rode the fastest last km: even faster then Horner did. But the pace at the bottom of the climb was higher in 2013 then it was in 2010.

I notice Brambilla lost over five minutes today and has dropped from 11th to 24th in GC.
Ouch. Could be the best thing for him in the long run though. At least now he'll go on the attack, hunting for stages. Better than slowly and painfully falling down the GC while wasting all the energy he could put to better use.

It is so great so see an attacking, positive champion like Froome absolutely destroying a negative rider like Quintana race after race.
We need more Froomes, less Quintanas in the peloton. Did you guys saw him "attacking" when the police were having trouble keeping the fans in line, so only one or 2 (with valverde) riders had space? Froome still owned his ***.

What a champion.

:surprised:

It's even more absurd if you watch Froome/Cobo combo 2011 sprinting at supersonic speeds just to be like 30 sec. slower than Hornerito.

Would be interesting how it would have been if either Quintana's or Froome's attack would have worked, since they lost a few seconds looking at each other. Horners time probably would have been impossible tough.

Still wonder how the hell Horner managed to do what he did in 2013. Clinic stuff on its own is not enough of an explanation

Another man for the breakaways! On the other side, De La Cruz managed to lose only 36s mantaining his top10 in the GC

For those having the done the counting, how are things distributed over the 3 GTs? Tour stages obviously count a lot more.

Froome: 5 Tour road stages + 2 ITT, 2 Vuelta road stages + 1 TTT

Contador: 2 Tour road stages + 1 ITT + 1 TTT, 5 Vuelta road stages

Unless of course you follow through Netserk's fantasy where doping is legal.
