I think Dennis would have finished 2nd if he had stayed upright. Dumoulin's performance was insane and he looked in total control even saying that he lost his back wheel when cornering on the climb a few times with the wet conditions. It wasn't so much the fact that he won but the winning margin that was surprising. Roglic also showed that he can climb uphill as well as ski down a mountain, his performance up that last climb was unbelievable, even posting the best time of the day in wet conditions over many specialist climbers.
I'm sure Roglic can do that very well, but ski jumping isn't exactly about skiing down a mountain :D

Well that was a bit rubbish. I guess ultimately the three strongest TTs currently ended up on the podium. But still, that gimmicky last climb was a joke for a worlds ITT.

Dumoulin is a better TT'er than Froome, especially on a rolling/hilly parcours - Froome needs a pan flat course to beat Dumoulin.

2016 Froome gets olympic bronze because Dennis has a mechanical
2017 Froome gets WC bronze because Dennis crashes.

I see a similarity

Dennis has little luck in major ITT's, but has no-one to blame, except for himself today.

I just read that Tom questioned his powermeter during the race. If that is an indication that he keeps improving then he might actually be a threat to Froome.

The gao from 2 to 10 is smaller than 1 to 2. I wonder if Froome will be worried if they put a hard hilly time trial in the TDF

Froome will want the TT to be as flat as a pancake - Though Porte can do well in this type of TT if he is still on his bike.

I doubt Froome will read too much into this one result. Dumoulin has basically been preparing to peak for this for the last four months. Froome has won two GTs in the meantime and has ridden this almost as an afterthought. Will be a different scenario mid GT.

This. Though I believe Tom is the better TTer no matter the parcours.

Maybe here. Let's not get carried away!

To be fair, TD has won the Giro, so his climbing can't be that much worse.

Take away Froome's superteam and I'd say they were pretty equal.

Absolutely, I'd back Dumoulin over Froome as well on anything but a genuine MTT. But I think the differences today were definitely exaggerated because of the different prep.

Folk would be good to remember what you've written

So Froome was 11 seconds ahead of Roglic just before the carpet, and 24 seconds behind at the top of the hill: would he have a silver medal if he had changed his bike?

Although Dumoulin does not seem to be vulnerable to criticism, and Dennis would seem to be an exception, it looks as though the wiser choice was to change based on this list.

It would have been really interesting to see someone ignore the red carpet, make their own change where and when they wanted, and then challenge any time sanction at CAS. As far as I can see, there is nothing n the laws of cycling that enables the organisers to insist that bike changes happen in a designated zone, and the rules of a sport cannot be changed on an ad hoc basis. UCI's lack of respect for the concept of Rule of Law is unbelievable.

I don't think changing bikes was the wiser choice, looking at how only 2 of the 10 fastest on the climb made a bike change, EBH being a special case.

Definately more than 2. Dennis, roglic, ebh and kelderman were on a road bike. Out of my head, as I dint even see it, but from what I read.

I think its pretty obvious. It's still amazing he has bronze, his body should be crumbling by now.
Allthough if dennis didnt crash he wouldnt have a medal.

Dennis crashes a lot though. Shame for him, but he was the only one today that couldve contested tom a bit. My guess he wouldve ended up at 30s behind Tom.

No.

Yeah ...you are right Dumoulin IS better on the climbs

(and his team are very good)
calm down
In fairness the tdf vs Giro estimated watts were equal. Given the Giro route (and assuming Dumoulin wouldn't have taken a *** halfway through) and their respective form (Froome's tour form), Tom would've won.
