Re: 2018 Giro d'Italia, Stage 1: Jerusalem - Jerusalem ITT 9

Perhaps too "mountainous" for Van Emden, maybe his teammate Koen Bouwman can surprise and reach the first 5-10 instead. I think Bouwman will be one of the positive surprises of the Giro, he has clearly become a stronger rider this year.

Thanks Flo for starting the first Giro 2018 stage thread.

Personally I've decided to take no interest in the Giro
until next Tuesday when we'll have the Italian start
Catania → Caltagirone.

I vow to make no further comment on GIro related thread until then.
That's them told, I guess.
Ciao.
I did not start any thread ;)
PS I agree with the rest of your statement

Rohan Dennis is the big favourite imo. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins by 10 seconds or so. The heat (around 33C predicted for Friday afternoon) suits him as well, as he has shown in Utrecht for example. Doesn't mean the others are without a chance though, along the already mentioned favourites I expect good performances by the Trek-youngsters Pedersen and Mullen.
Utrecht was pan flat, this isn't. The hilly bit makes it suddenly much better for Dumoulin and less so for Dennis, Van Emden and other flat specialists

Yes, hilly may be an issue for Van Emden, but "long"? He won a 30kms TT last year.

I've always seen Van Emden as a pure flat prologue specialist but yeah you can prove me wrong with that stat. I guess it will also depend on his form. Edit: I completely forgot that he indeed won the last stage of the Giro. Maybe as he did not target the GC, he could have ""softpedaled"" the whole thing and kept something in the tank for this one?

Is Dennis more considered as a flat-ITT specialist? I thought he was good on hilly ones since he (used to) climb pretty nicely.

Yeah Dennis is better at the flat ones (much better), even more so when it's short.

Van Emden is actually really good at long flat ITT's as well. Just no hilly ones. I don't know why you see him as a prologue specialist. While he's certainly very good at them, ideal length for van emden would be 25-40km flat

Yeah, I think the prologue is very hard for a prologue. Great route. Dennis is my favorite but Dumoulin isn't far behind. I think it's gonna be close between the two and they should take the top two spots on the podium. Then it gets wide open for the last podium spot. I actually think that Froome will do great. The course suits him really well and he showed in last year's Tour that he's good on time trials this lenght when he's in form. Campenaerts is my favorite for the third podium spot though, as he's developed into a top tier timetrialist and the route suits him. Kiryienka is flying a bit under the radar here and he's most well-known for his skills in longer ITT's, but he's actually very strong and underrated in short time trials as well. Finally I'll mention Schachmann who seems to be in stellar shape and has been climbing very well lately and the route should suit him perfectly.

My prediction:

1. Dennis
2. Dumoulin
3. Campenaerts
4. Kiryienka
5. Schachmann
6. Froome

Isn't the prologue too long to be a prologue?

According to some arbitrary official limit, yes.

That is why its stage 1.

Well, Hugo Koblet referred to it as the "prologue" in his post.

As for the arbitrary limit; in literature a prologue is usually a short opening chapter.
And I would describe this as a short opening chapter :) It's all semantics anyway.
When would you no longer describe it as a short opening chapter? ;)
