Nice little race going on at the front now. Will see if the pair out front can keep that gap or not.

They can make a deal: Masnada the stage, Conti the pink. A stage win would be great for Androni G.
Masnada needs to stop trying to drop Conti then! :D

If the gaps hold as they are now (with about 20K to go), Conti would be leading the Giro by more than 4 minutes. Is Jumbo giving up too much time?

Stage 1 aside, this race has been a borin' borefest thus far. I thought the Giro of Italy was meant to be exciting and unpredictable and stuff.

They've stacked the back end of the race and put some very long stages up front with the hope of stopping mountain trains dominating the fun bits. It's a slow burn but hopefully it'll work out.

Well I think they overdid the back end stacking. They should've given us *something* by now to keep us entertained & interested & awake.

I for one would love to see a mini strade bianche stage in the first week. 25KM of dirt roads. I really enjoyed the cobbled tour stages. Maybe strade doesn't have the prestige of yet
The 2010 giro had an epic strade stage that Cadel Evans won

He's no Chiappucci. He might survive the time trial and one mountain stage in pink, but he doesn't become a threat for the final victory.

Seems like Oomen being there means that Conti isn't going to take pink with several minutes.

lol, guess not. Great for the race if he can emulate Arroyo later on though. Hope Masnada takes the win here :D

Just switched on.

Can someone explain why the other teams are handing Oomen 7 minutes, which means Sunweb again has an overall contender to ride for?
Oomen isnt a threat

I think Oomen becomes a candidate for the top 10, but I don't think he's strong enough for a podium. He might be slightly ahead of Roglic after today, but that won't be enough.

The biggest mountain stages will produce gaps approaching double-digits between the 1st and the ~15th rider. None of the riders in the breakaway are a threat.

Can’t work out if Conti is just wheel sucking or he is struggling to take a long turn at the front. Anyway I’m rooting for Masnada here.

Oomen is nearly 6 minutes down. By the time the bunch get over the climb and pick up the speed he'll probably still be behind Roglic and isn't a real threat, even if he's just ahead. The other young riders teams are really the ones who should be looking at it or the also rans who want a top 10.

I'd guess their deal would involve Masnada working more so Conti can try keep the jersey as long as possible.

The big question is: Who of Plaza and Carboni will beat Rojas so he gets his mandatory fourth spot?

I agree, they were stunning in Tour of the Alps.

I do think Oomen is the greater overall threat though, over a 3 week race. - He is a young GC contender in training, who - I remind you - got 9th overall at last years Giro.

Handing him 7 minutes, when he had already lost 6 helping Dumoulin, seems weird to me.

I do understand Jumbo wanting to lose the jersey this early in the race, but I don't understand the size of the gap..... Conti was only 2 minutes ahead - no need to give them 7!

Good for the race to have a shakeup. But we need a bigger break tomorrow to shake it more up.. to L'Aquila

Sadly, we don't have Richie Porte here to provide that kind of spectacular show this year.

Your reasoning don't really make sense. Whether Oomen has lost time due to helping Dumo, crashing, being bad or whatever doesn't matter. Oomen is a fine young rider in the mountains, but he is nothing in the bigger picture of things. Therefore, the other teams dont really care about him, Conti and all the other guys.
