It’s a long, demanding stage, so I think it will be the one that pretty much sets up the rest of the race. Carapaz and Almeida seem best equipped to handle this, and Hindley seems to be in the best form. Nibali I expect to show where he is really at in the race, which is what Blockhaus showed - top ten in the race, but a step below the real contenders.

It's going to come down to the last 12 km only for the GC contenders.
I have some small hope that some teams want to get rid of Almeida in the descent of Mortirolo.

But other than that, yes the final climb is so tough that no GC contenders will take a lot of risk before.

No, cause naturally its the first of 4 really hard stages. Teams will most likely look where they stand before trying some long range stuff, I think thats pretty normal.

Does this mean they're descending the proper steep side of Mortirolo?
I hope Almeida has done some bouldering sessions before the Giro if that's the case, he'll need the grip strength descending on the hoods.

I think the race will explode on Teglio climb. Carapaz and Hindley to finish same time. And let's hope Nibali won't pay for the rest day.

A mile of denivelation in just under 22k's... steep but not the steepest.

"Una forte perturbazione raggiungerà l’Italia nella giornata di martedì con intensi temporali in previsione per le regioni del nord."

Music to my hears. Let's hope we don't have the usual RAI shenenigans with 4 and a half hours of fixed cameras from Aprica.
Oh my word that would suck! Ivan Basso said in the pre-Giro analyses that this stage will be decisive for the entire race.

RAI is no longer in charge. Which I thought would be great news before the Giro, but now I'm not so optimistic.

This is where Almeida surprises everyone with a long range attack on Mortirolo and teammates up the road.
