2022 Spring Classics CQ Game

About a week and a half to go, so time to launch this one.

For many fans, it is the one day races during the spring that are the essence of the sport rather than the three week marathons. This is your chance to show your expertise in recognising the ability of the riders in the varied routes that such races encompass.
Your team will consist of 12 riders, and your budget is 3000pts, the price of each rider being his 2021 CQ scores: you might have the data left over from your Main game selection investigations, or look at the list here (after setting the year to 2021), or download cq20220101.zip from here.

You will score points (hopefully) at the one day races of WorldTour or ProTour from the last weekend of February to the first of May. There are 25 of them:

Teams to me by PM at Cycling News or Velorooms by the time the Omloop starts in the (European) morning of 26th Feb; updates on the evening of each race, hopefully.

Hopefully we are going to have a full Spring programme after a couple of disrupted years: we even have an Autumn classic that has changed dates to get involved, having enjoyed its appearance in the 2020 redux version of the game.

Good luck!

Oh I forgot about this. Great fun but hard to predict who will be starting in the races.

There are 95 different riders selected so far, with all sorts of different races in mind. 58 of them are unique to the manager that chose them, while 3 are in more than half the teams. 11 of those picked are at a cost of 500 points or more: only one team has none of these major picks, everyone else has at least two of them. Popularity rankings vary from 30% to 88% of the most popular possible (thus far) team.
If every rider selected performs exactly the same in this set of races as they did last year, the range of final scores will be from 1478 down to 542 (I have found a legitimate team, excluding retired riders, that would score 2161 if that unlikely scenario were to happen).

If you have sent in a team and not had an acknowledgement, please nudge me.

But these numbers are really just a ruse to bump the thread and remind you to get your team in by Saturday morning.

So here we go:
Teams and Riders
27 teams (plus three calculated ones: I'll mention them later) and 124 riders. The 75 of those that are unique picks are indicated here with an asterisk.

2021 Classics ranking
Probably not very significant, but this shows the points earned by the riders in these teams in this set of races last year. Do low scores mean that they are not suited to these races, or that they are good value picks this year after underscoring last time? Disclosure: I use it as part of my selection thoughts (hence some of my stranger UPs).

SoLastYear
2161
The SoLastYear team is the second of the additional teams: as mentioned earlier in the thread, I believe it is the highest scoring( in terms of these races in 2021) bunch that are still riding that can be put together, within budget.

The third calculated team that you will see in updates comprises the 12 most popular picks in the Main CQ Game: it is slightly over budget but has big spends on GC specialists who will have no real ambitions in this series.

Argh, had my team almost ready a few days ago and wanted to wait until closer to the deadline , in case of late news, and send it in, but completely forgot to do so, so missing out of the game now for the first time. But I will be back next year and good luck to the rest.

Too late for a late entry now, with the first race done, but my team would have looked like this:

PIDCOCK Thomas 708
VANMARCKE Sep 377
BETTIOL Alberto 257
NARVAEZ PRADO Jhonatan Manuel
77
DE LIE Arnaud 57
JUNGELS Bob 42
SHEFFIELD Magnus 19
NAESEN Oliver 324
TURGIS Anthony 540
PEDERSEN Mads 589
JOHANSEN Julius 5
UIJTDEBROEKS Cian 0

2995

Team intersections
The most similar teams, with 9 men in common, are those of Amis Velo and Kazistuta. There are a few pairings that have an overlap of 7 riders:
Armchair and Los Brolin
Bminchow and Kazistuta
Kazistuta and Otoxiep87
Kazistuta and Mellow Velo

Big Spends
The budget allows an average spend of 250 points per rider: the picks that were deemed worth twice as much as that were:
Sagan with Pidcock: Bicycle Boy, Del1962
with Covi: DJSprtsch

Lampaert with Pidcock: Mellow Velo

Cosnefroy with Krisstof: Laarsland

Pidcock with Jakobsen and Pedersen: Rufs
with Politt and Benoot: Blues in the Bottle, Otoxiep87
with Pedersen: Comodoro,
with Pedersen and Moscon: Salvarani
with Kristoff: Search
with Moscon: Bminchow, Kazistuta
with Moscon and Turgis: Rote Laterne
with Moscon and Covi: Leadbelly
with Covi: Jumbo Visma Fan,
alone: Berflamand

Politt with Kristoff and Moscon: Slow Climber

Van Avermaet alone: Evans is the Best

Moscon with Turgis: Vladimir
with Benoot: Amis Velo,

Kwiatkowski with Benoot: Scrooll07

Turgis with Covi: Armchair Cyclist, Los Brolin
alone: TRiley36

Redhead Dane has no-one of 500 or more, Vanmarcke at 377 being her most expensive rider.

Inter-forum challenge
Averaged out scores for the two forums that co-host the game:
The VeloRooms team is AmisVelo, Josedin, Leadbelly, MellowVelo, Otoxiep87, RoteLaterne, Scrool07 and Search
Everyone else (except me) is part of the Cycling News Forum team.

Sorry the info has been spread so much across the afternoon: I was trying to host guests, cook lunch, watch 5 races and cheer on two nephews in wins in the Irish national Indoor Athletics championships.

I'll have a spin on the trainer, then see what I can work out from today's pair of races.

I look after my loyal customers. Included in the spreadsheet:if anyone wants to add their own asterisk, that's up to them. If he wins, I will deduct the late entry fee from the cash prize.

But don't expect me to recalculate all the popularity data and overlap data...

I'll do the lesser of the day's events first, largely by way of testing the spreadsheet.
It is at least more impactful than last year, when it yielded points from one unique pick, and that was it. I'm not sure that I have ever watched it before: nice race (I rewound to last 30km)

Green points? What are they?
There is a positions based minor classification in the game. The top ten teams in every race (regardless of the category of the race) receive 'green points' in the distribution 80, 50, 35, 25, 15, 10, 5, 3, 2, 1 (lifted from the stage points that CQ give in the Tour de France). Where there is a tie, points are aggregated and shared (so here the points for 5th to 8th were shared equally between the 4 teams in joint 5th (15+10+5+3=33, 33/4=8.25))

I don't think the cameras showed us Cosnefroy (and Martin) overtaking Ayuso, but that move determined today's outcome as far as this game is concerned.

Standings
Of course, these will only stand until I get around to processing the KBK results, but that might be a while: need to visit the mother-in-law.

Green
TRiley takes a first and a second from the French undercard on the opening weekend.
