Remco nowhere near peak makes the race interesting, he cant be happy with that, but he have 3-4 stages to recuperate on so there is time yet.
Still if he would have been in peak form this race would be over now.
And so it begins…

JK. It really is tough. Riders, at least the ones I cheer for, almost always crash in GTs. Sometimes they win anyways, sometimes they don’t. And you never know what would have happened without the crashes. It isn’t unreasonable to think that there has been some impact on Remco’s performance, but the crash didn’t appear to be so bad that he shouldn’t be able to win anyways if he’s really that much better. Roglic has crashed probably 8 times or so during his Vuelta victories.

Sounds bit silly but I don’t think QS would have taken this GC on the first rest day. This is Remco’s playground, his gaps are not just relatively minor, but also the problem that there are numerous people close with different cards to play.

Fun fact: if Remco had maintained his pace at the 1st check point, he would have finished in 39:42, two minutes ahead of Roglic.
Remco keeps talking about learning from “experienced riders” the art of pacing, but I don’t see any evidence of it. It must have been intimidating to others to hear that time gap, but you have to think that if he’d gone out 10 seconds slower be might have finished 30 seconds faster. Roglic, on the other hand, could learn a little from Remco. Likely went out too slow.

Where has this TTing come from for Tao? He was never close to being this good. He was good/decent, but not elite.
He said in the interview that the new regulations allow him to have a more comfortable position on the bike.

I don't know how the regulations have changed. Something about handlebar position? Someone here knows I guess?

Yes, I'd say a lot of that was down to the level that year. We've 12 years or so of them looking at monitors and riding a set pace. I expect nothing off of Ineos but boredom
I think the idea that the level was *** that year has been rebuked by the events of the past 12 months.

Ultimately, it depends on the race situation. Right now, Thomas, TGH and Roglic are basically on the same time, so ideally Roglic is narrowly the strongest of the three (or Evenepoel makes a miraculous recovery) so that Ineos both can and needs to race aggressively. For all Ineos' faults, when they have been in behind-but-winnable positions in GTs, they've always gone for it, whether on Stelvio and Sestrière in that Giro, Iséran in the 2019 Tour, or Finestre in the 2018 Giro. Don't see why they wouldn't do the same this time.

What a demolition by Remco! He crushed Ineos drones and the ski-jumper in style...oh wait.
He started like a bullet but clearly couldn't keep his pace. OTOH Primoz started slowly and was accelerating later. Ineos guys were up there all the time. Result? Only 17 seconds difference between those four. Evenepoel is clearly under the weather, which is consistent with yesterday. It can be associated with his crash - this explanation (giving hope for improvement) would be better from his fans perspective as the other explanation is accumulated fatigue. Ineos guys very strong, especially Tao impresses me in this race. Primoz limited his loss to Remco well but he has to be wary of stronger than expected Ineos duo.

Seems Kung needs divine intervention to win a TT. Roglic gap was about what I expected if not better. Thomas seemed to utter the F word when Remco crossed the line, something along the lines of FFS...........trouble is he made his team mate even glummer........... good performances all round by the best GC riders. The weather didn't make much difference after all.
