Race 24 Liege-Bastogne-Liege

The penultimate event, but is it the decisive one?

Not many scoring riders, but one very significant one:

Just 7 five pointers today, including Alaphlippe, who is on 24 teams.

Once again, the majority of teams have Pidcock + fivers.

Salvarani only has to finish to claim the title (I'm not sure how one can fail to finish in this).
BitB joins Slow Climber and DJSprtsch with three outright wins in a race: Salvarani has 2, and Devil's Elbow in 5th has none.
Teams down to 7th still have a chance for the podium.

Main Game
Having either Pidcock or Van der Poel has been essential: having both looks to have been the key.

One race left, 180 points for the winning rider of Eschborn Frankfurt, but there are not many riders chosen in the game who could flourish there, if the race is as expected. Welsford or not Welsford?

I have rather taken my eye off the ball for the startlist changes in our decisive event, but it would appear that Sam Welsford is not now riding in Frankfurt, which puts a rather large spoke in the wheels of Salvarani's comeback hopes. What I see in the PCS startlist offers little prospect of big points for any of the top three in their last spin of the bottle.

Evans is the Best

Hermans

All shall be confirmed on Monday.

Hermans was the only one to make the front group so that should be it. Unless there's a Soren Kragh Andersen team that can jump in front of every one else.

The final showdown, and a better race than I had anticipated.

Race 25 Eschborn-Frankfurt
A better race to watch, perhaps, but not outstanding in terms of points for our game.

It wasn't actually that bad in terms of contribution to the team's scores: today was the 12th highest points-yielding event, and it outscored Gent-Wevelgem, Fleche Wallonne and Brabantse Pijl, which one might expect to be higher scoring. I trust my abbreviations will be self-evident.

Winning on the day bumped a new player, Twiddle87, into the top ten here, with his second race victory. Salvarani was knocked off the top in the main classification in Liege, but the win here has looked nailed on for some time, with 2 outright wins, 2 shared wins, 3 seconds and a third. Slow Climber, Blues in the Bottle and DJSprtsch each got 3 wins, but the manager with most top tens (or tied for top ten) was DJW.
My only consolation was that there were 7 teams that got fewer top tens than me (DJSprtsch only got 6, but 3 of them were wins!), but all 7 got a podium at some point.

I am always pleased when the minor classification returns a rather different result than the game proper: I don't think I am spoiling the surprise too much by saying that our overall winner didn't even make the top ten here.

Spring Classics CQ Game, the final reckoning

A proud day for Mrs ITB, as her two boys top the final table.

Evans will have been pleased to see no Sam Welsford on the startline, and more so to see Ben Hermans in the decisive break. DJW, Twiddle and Jumbo Visma Fan will have been pleased to see a last minute boost to their standings.

The margins looked fairly comfortable in the end, but I think the game was nicely balanced this time around.

Congratulations to Evans is the Best, and to Blues in the Bottle and Salvarani for their podium places, and thanks to all for entering: I hope it gave an extra aspect to your springtime viewing.

Not much time left before you need to get your entries in for the Giro CQ Game, don't be late.

I hope to do some rider analysis tomorrow, but if you want to dig deeper into the numbers for yourselves, here they are.

Not picking Ala or Pidcock was a bold strategy from me... and it was almost enough to win the overall but finished 3rd in the end. I will take the win in the Green jersey competition for having a pretty consistent team that scored in many races.

Biggest what if is if Turner doesnt crash in Omloop, but that is something you cant control so not something to dwell over.

Congratulations to @EvansIsTheBest for winning the game and to @Armchair cyclist for arranging it. Updating very fast after each race. Very much appreciated.

Is four riders who scored nothing a record for a winning team in a game like this? Goes to show that the cheap value picks are less important than getting the big calls right.
Nearly five even, Hermans only scored on the last day. I don't think anybody has won with such a top heavy team before. It helps that the winning score was lower than most years. Usually the winner scores 2k+ and I don't think you can get there without some good value picks.

But generally speaking, I think that you need to get the right expensive picks and then between teams that share the winning combo of expensive guys, the value picks make the difference. So you need both unless there's something crazy happening like only one team having the right combo of high cost picks.

Armchair you are right, Mrs. ITB was so pleased with her boys. Both she and I were very happy because this is as high as I have scored. Thanks for putting the game on.
Congratulations to EitB your big guys did their jobs. Salvarani sorry to pass you at the end; but it felt good from my seat. See you all in Italy.

Just as low in the popularity rankings as RhD's team.

The Collective Ignorance team Best possible of those that nobody picked, with the same provisos about my accuracy.

Re: collective ignorance, you have enough budget left to replace Peters with Grégoire, right? Nudges the score up a little.
Not in the Collective Ignorance team I couldn't, because Gregoire was picked 4 times, but good spot, I could have put him into the Best Possible team alongside Bjerg in place of Ballerini and Van Lijke to bump that score up by 21 points (and 97 spare points that I can't see a way of getting an advantage out of)

The data set that I forgot earlier was the impeccable picks list

Of course, I put myself at a disadvantage by deliberately making a novelty team. However, it sure didn't help that the rider I reasonably could have expected to score me a decent haul managed to break his arm twice. Otherwise, who knows if I could have been within a 100 points of @Rufs?
And, yes, I checked. He doesn't have B. Turner.

Congratulations EITB! Van Baarle seemed like an inspired unique pick for me after the opening race.....but not to be. But 4th is a decent finish with a few to the long game across the season....

Question:
Tro-Bro Léon is a 1.Pro race.
And it's spring.
Why is it not part of the game?
Because the game starts with the first WT one-day race in spring and ends with the final WT one-day race in spring - two natural cutoffs. Yes, you could include all the 1.Pros in May, but @Armchair cyclist has a Giro game to run then, most players will be much more focused on that as well, and there wouldn't be very many points scored in May anyway so the game would just go on and on without much change to the rankings. In other words, nobody would be paying attention anymore.

I had a brief thought that Walscheid could have gotten a good position, which could - if the race had been included - have given me a few points.
Not that it would have helped me much...
