I think we shouldn't overestimate this stage. There has to be a reason why quintana choose the route du sud as his preparation for this tour. The reason probably is that he doesn't want to waste all his energy before the tour, so quintana probably just didn't want to go full *** (and maybe he didn't even give his best on the descent because he didn't want to risk anything, although thats pure speculation and probably not the case). The fact that his facial expression never changes is the reason why it is so difficult to judge how good he really is.

The commentator (not sure if Carlton or Bryan) kept repeating Quintana "must still be shaky" after he crashed out on a descent last year. Did he forget Alberto crashed out on a descent too?
due to a pot hole tho :), not bad descending skills ;)

Quintana is going to need Valverde's descending talents at the Tour.

well, he sure has valverde's wheelsucking "talents" down pat!

He just learned from the master, that is all!
Levi Leipheimer and Simon Gerrans are both in a complete other league to Alejandro Valverde when it comes to wheelsucking. Valverde will be very aggressive in smaller races then retreat into his shell in the big ones (actually the opposite of what Quintana seems to do!!!), they'd be sucking wheels to win (in the TT and sprint respectively) the Tour of a Car Park in Emptytown, Alabama.

Great race from Figueiredo as well! Will keep an eye on him in Torres Vedras ahead of the Volta...

Trevim must be all jumpy. Opening a 90's Krug to celebrate.
I'm quietly happy with his result because when Gallego bridged across i thought it was Figueiredo for a moment and I was already delighted thinking of Contador's face when he got dropped by a continental rider :p
Seriously though, top result for him. I hope someone picks him next season, Caja Rural, Axeon or something. Portuguese calendar is just not good enough for him (and other young riders) to develop.

What is the excuse this time Nairo worshipers?

The road surfaces were too rough?
Too much humidity?
The grass was too tall?
Bronchitis?
Hasn't raced enough?
Jet lag?
Too much sun?
Little sun?
Too much air?
Little air?

Hahaha

quintana's breathing rhythm was disrupted by smoke from the flare just before the top of the climb. ergo, he was not able to immediately respond when contador attacked on the descent.

speaking of which: i hope there will be some video available of contadors' initial attack on the descent. eurosport went to commercial break, nairo and alberto were together on descent. when race video resumed about two minutes later, contador was down the road. sure like to see how that happened. maybe it's just me, but i think 10 seconds in about two minutes is a lot to lose descent (unless one's surname happens to be 'schleck'' :D )

This. + 1000

Leipheimer and Gerrans are probably the two worst wheel suckers I have ever seen. Watching them "race" is nauseating.

I thought today Alberto raced as though he has little pressure. I think winning the Giro has relieved him of it, and he's now assured of a very successful season by winning a GT. He's going for a TdF win with a GT already under his belt, while the other contenders have comparatively little to show for their seasons thus far.

Yep but there could have been a pot hole in the roads here too, I would have thought he'd be a little less confident but he took those corners like a beast :)

I'm pretty happy with that. Didn't expect or want Bertie to do more than a few digs here and there on the hill, and attacking the descent just a bit of icing on the cake.

it is all part of bertie's plan: he's already proven that when on form, he can outclimb everyone. when on form, he is a threat in any time trial. sooooooooooooooo....just for the challenge of it, he will come into le tour carrying more weight than he has ever carried. this bit of extra weight will slightly affect his climbing BUT...heavier things roll downhill faster than lighter things, allowing alberto to gain more than enough time on his lighter, more timid rivals to secure the final yellow jersey.

ok, ok, i admit this is an embarassingly stoooooooooooooooooopid speculation BUT...if the right set of eye's reads this, i could score a job as a guest race commentator on british eurosport!! :D

You forgot too hot. Nairo demands below zero in temperature and it should rain as well (with a touch of breeze coming in from the northwest). Ideal would be Pluto in conjuction to Saturn also but second house in Saturn works too.

You mean Ryo ''Quintana is the best climber I've ever seen and will destroy everybody'' Hazuki?

I'm sure he'll come up with something.

tbh i think quintana has no interest in taking risks in this race.. so it's a Pyrrhic victory for Contador

I was expecting a Contador-Quintana-Hesjedal big battle but it didn't happen :(
I guess Hesjedal took it easy today as he knew that he doesn't have the form he had in the 3rd week of the Giro. I still hope he can reach it at the Tour..

So he comes in 2nd in the Route du Sud when he's still training for the Tour de France? Big deal... You guys are probably confusing your obnoxious Contador fandom with other cycling enthusiasts - not winning every race can happen because other cyclists are just better on the day.
