I didn't watch the climb unfortunately. When I first tuned in I was convinced that they would be caught, then LLS suddenly appeared and they had a chance. But I dind't expect this! Great last 30 km, I gotta catch the climb, seems Garbí always delivers great racing even when its a long way from home. Great stuff and Valverde winning is obviously a huge plus. He is amazing and apparently is just able to pick up where he left it in 2017, a great display of versatility and class today.

He is the favourite now, but I still won't underestime Fuglsang or Sky.

Reckon Sky will put a1 minute into MovieStar in the TTT and close to a minute on Astana - Sky should win this race.

I wouldn't underestimate Astana's TTT team. They aren't going to lose more than 30 ses. Fuglsang, LLS and Grivko is a really strong trio in the TTT discipline. Chernetckii, Moser and Bilbao are also decent.

Movistar will. Valverde is probably the strongest team trialist on the team.

Ok, Sütterlin is there as a replacement for Amador. On paper, it helps Valverde a little bit so he don't have to do most of the work but Sütterlin didn't turn out to be the next Tony Martin.

Astana played it correctly I think. Ensure the time gap and set it up as a "strongest wins" finish. They may well (as a result) get some help from Movistar later in this race

Astana did nothing wrong. They need a good time gap on Sky before the TT.

Only thing they did wrong was allowing Sanchez to sprint with Valverde. Valverde will always be the fastest and the Bird need those two secs on Poels.

:surprised:
Isnt that a bit too much?
Yeah, that is way too much in a 23k TTT. Maybe on Movistar, but not on Astana.

Lotto's TT team is really good as well. Powless, Bouwman, Van Emden, Roglic himself.

But the MTF climb the next day isn't a Roglic climb, so I doubt it he will make it to top 3 overall.

A decent showing by Fabbro in his first stag race as a pro (the next ultramythical climber?).
Great stuff by Astana and Bala.

MovieStar will do well to get into 5th place in the TTT - They've lost too many of their strong TTer's to other times - And they may also suffer in the TDF.

Movistar?

No, MovieStar, which is apparently a fantasy team he created.
I'm guessing their riders are Salvodelli, Griepel and Thomas Geraint

Great tactics by Valverde and Astana. I also agree that the only reason they stayed away is because Sanchez was able to join them. As a very strong TTer he was the force that kept them with a gap back to the group that was chasing. Bad tactics on Sky's part. The time gap is big for both Valverde and Fugelsang, although I think bigger for Valverde as Astana should have a decent TTT team. Movistar bringing in Sütterlin was specifically for the TTT. He's not Tony Martin, Malori, or Cancellara but he's the best Time Trialist they have. The only other time trial specialist on the team is Oliveria. After those two the best time trialists are Valverde, Amador and Landa.
One other thought, with Valverde getting into a 3 person break and the fact they were working well together he got some TTT practice in in race conditions even if it was with two Astana riders instead of team mates.

That may well be, but personally I love the idea of Castroviejo sipping on a beer together with Plato.

yes

but it's raining enough to affect the stage
It was snowing in Cocentaina this morning - but should be fine for the MTF tomorrow. Not sure this is what the riders had in mind when signing up for this race - so will be interesting to see who is still up it in these conditions.

You have to think Valverde will be pretty cautious after what happened the last time he was on a TT bike in the rain. On the other hand, BMC look like a team who could go very well in bad weather.

Oh ffs. I would much rather Sky just took out 30 secs in dry conditions and everyone stayed safe instead of this..... please just don't crash, Valverde
