Great round so far. Friday night epic between WC and North with Naita kicking the sealer!

That was a great game with a great finish. Naitanui marking and kicking the goal under pressure. "Magic" Daw still coming along.

The cheating Dons sent packing by the under fire Lions.
Yes glad to see that win by Brisbane although I have a soft spot for Essendon.

And the Injury ravaged unbeaten Geelong biting the dust at the hands of a equally depleted Pies.

Not happy there. Any day Collingwood loses is a good day.

The only irritation is as usual, the incompetent and inconsistent Umpires.

Hawthorn (my team) destroyed the completely soulless giants. I cannot stomach any game involving the giants, there is just no passion involved :(. At least the Suns have developed an identity and passion about the way they play.

Anyway, good bump!

Yr. I like Geelong much more than Collingwood, but it was a truly remarkable win against the odds.

Yr, the Suns are tracking along nicely, at least they have Ablett and a few older players to guide them. GWS are getting one hiding after another, and even if they have all the young stars, losing continuously will have an adverse effect on them. The crowd support is truly pathetic too.

Cool game, easy rules (no BS like yellow cards, red cards, offsides), no pussies pretending (like in soccer), cool scores, acceptable salaries at 250.000 average... thus; should be more popular than soccer around the world.

Just saw a documentary of the 89 final. Gary Ablett Sr. seems to have been a folk hero... and this Dermott Brereton, just awesome how he played trou with broken ribs from minute one on.

True football like AF. Who knows, if in the 80s american football wasn´t first shown in Germany, I might have gotten into "Footy".

Great sport taste you have there. Congrats Australia...

Awesome game. After circa 25 years this is my 2nd try (back in the 80s no one on german TV really explained the rules, and there was no constant schedule like with NFL games).
But now with internet, everything is possible. Even rules are explained to great length (even though technical english is hard to crasp sometimes). Thus I still struggle a bit with "holding the ball", and what is allowed/or not for offensive and defensive players contesting a mark.
Otherwise, a hell of a game (like I instantly knew back in the 80s).
Just watching Geelong v Hawthorn pre-finals 2013.
I have yet to get bored (3rd Otr of a 2 1/2 hr televised game, put up on youtube). Action non-stop. Wow. :)
Wish there was forward passing allowed. Since its not, the NFL still has the upper hand.
Anyway, is there any chance to see the finals of 2014 live in internet?
Hope someone answers...

If I was born in Australia, there is a 100% chance I would have played that game. No doubt.

ESPN in the UK broadcast the AFL each week (live), and will do the same for the final. Not sure if it is the same in continental Europe though. Final would start around 5-6am in Europe.

Anyway, tipping the Swans to win the comp this year.

To be fair foxxy, most followers of the sport have trouble following this at times, the interpretation of these particular rules seems to be quite flexible and can appear to change from week to week if not year to year.

Really excited about this weekend's games, Geelong V Hawthorn on Friday night, freo Sydney on Saturday plus the two elimination games, this is the best week of football all year.

Too bad we havn´t AFL on pay-free TV in Germany. Now that I crasp the rules, I am more excited than ever about this great sport. Really close to the other true football (AF).
I guess I will watch another (older) full match on youtube tonight. When did I ever do that with a soccer game when sober? TBH, I can´t remember. Even the past soccer WC, when I watched a full game, I still did something else while watching. "Footy" OTOH keeps you on the screen, no bore in between (nice rhym, isn´t it? :D)

OK. In normal english words, can you describe the "holding ball" and "mark" (what´s allowed/what not for both offense and defense) rules, how it should be called. So I could follow it better when the ref was wrong or not.

Am I right, that the tackled player must get rid of the ball instantly as soon he is touched by an opponent?
If he can´t handball (because one hand is hold by the tackler) to dispose the ball, he also can "throw" it or kick it? Can he tuck the ball to his body when he has no chance to release the ball (for example when the defender holds both his arms while tackling), go down tackled, and a "throw up" by the ref will follow?
The defense can "block" a non ball-holder, but not tackle him?
The ref will always make a "throw in" when the ball goes out of bounds, or are there exceptions?
How does the ref and/or opponent know if the player who got awarded a free kick "plays on", or decides to indeed free kick?

What I learned the past couple of days (besides the rules. I love the non-offside rule BTW): 18 teams and 9 of them (10 if you count Geelong to the area) play in Melbourne. That´s a little crowded, isn´t it? I think I will look for a "outside" team to cheer for. Even though I like that Hawthorn-Geelong rivalary (saw the 89 docu, read about "the curse"). May I take Fremantle Dockers? I like this white/blue dresses...
Who are the 5/6 millionare superstars to look for in a game?

I know lots of questions, but a new "Footy" fan is always welcome, and helped, right? :)

Thanks in advance.

BTW, that Geelong v Hawthorn pre-final of 2013 I watched full yesterday was a jackpot. Great comeback by Hawthorn in the final 10 minutes, plus ending the curse (?). Wow!

Today I just random picked the Essendon vs Collingwood Anzac day game 2013. Let´s see if that´s as good a game as yesterday. Good that I don´t know the scores, so it´s like watching it live....
Had to change (bad quality), thus I watch Carlton vs Collingwood round 3/2012

The golden rule is as follows:

If your team is playing and one of your players tackles the a player on the other team who has the ball - it's holding the ball.

If your team is playing and one of your players has the ball and is tackled - it's not holding the ball.

Now the actual rule(s):

FoxxyBrown1111 said:

Not instantly, the tackled player has a brief window of opportunity to get rid of it (legitimately) while being tackled, this window may last anywhere between 2-5 seconds depending on the stage of the game and how the umpire is feeling at the time.

FoxxyBrown1111 said:

He cannot throw it, that's a throw and a free kick to the opposition.

Likewise he cannot throw it in the air and punch it with the fist of the hand he has just thrown it with, that's a free kick.

He can kick it though, and this is a skill that we have really started to see developed in the last year or two, players actually kicking the ball while being tackled, it's quite an amazing skill.

FoxxyBrown1111 said:

This is where it gets trickly.

If the umpire deems a player had an opportunity to get rid of the ball, but then got tackled, if he doesn't get rid of it legitimately then he will get called for "holding the ball" - an example of this, player gets the ball, tries a juke move around a defender but the defender tackles him and he can't get rid of it.

However if the umpire deems that a player didn't have an opportunity to get rid of the ball before being tackled (eg player takes the ball and then gets completely blindsided by a tackler) then a "throw up" (or "ball up" being the correct term) is called.

It seems quite straight forward when you explain it like that, but it's all open to interpretation and there's so many things going on at once quite often it doesn't seem to be consistent.

1. In most cases yes, a bit like checking in ice-hockey, there are limits as to how much you can do it, and you can only do it if the ball is within 5 metres I think.

There are slightly different rules for marking contests, where you aren't meant to block someone out of a marking contest, so defenders do it but make it look like they're going for the mark.

2. When one team kicks the ball out of bounds on the full (with no one having touched it) - the other team gets a free kick.

3. The ref will tell them, the ref (umpire) will talk to the players the whole game. When a free kick is awarded the team on the receiving end will have the opportunity to "play on" if it's to their advantage, that's their choice.

The "play on" thing is funny, sometimes the umpire will say "play on" if it looks like players are either waiting for a free kick to be paid or if it just looks like they need to be reminded the game is still going.

Quite a funny thing to try and explain, what other sport to players need to be reminded that the game is still going?

But when you grow up playing the game it seems natural.

Thanks for the post leftover. :)
I´ll get back to it now and then when I see a situation I am not fully understanding.

Carlton vs Collingwood round 3/2012 was kinda blowout. I had the feeling midway trou the 3rd otr there won´t be any comback. So I skipped the rest... Good. Coz indeed it was a blowout.

So I watched another one: Essendon vs Fremantle 3/2013. Score was 47-10 Fremantle around end of 2nd Q, lots of easy kicks missed wide... I thought OMG, another blowout + ugly game... So I just listen to the commentators, while doing something else... HUGE mistake. Essendon came back to win it 72-68. On the road. And Fremantle had a "easy" last second kick hitting the post. What a drama. Just wow! Such thing never ever happens in soccer. Down by 6 (!) goals to win... Unbelievable. Even in the NFL such kind of dramatic comebacks "only" happen a handful of times during a season.
I learned: A AFL game is never out of reach. Amazing! I love it...

That goal of the year 2013. Fantastic. Speed, power and skill combined in a brutal endurance sport. What a display of athleticism... and the mark of the years are also great to watch. Like hail marys caught in an NFL game.

I´ll check youtube if they have the recommended game. I will watch if they have. OFC. :)

leftover, do they bring replays the next day of full playoff matches in the internet, somewhere?

Or you can upload the games to youtube. And before they delete them, I can watch it. :D ;)

My first ever (rookie) picks:
Hawthorn beats Geelong by 10 or less.
Sydney beats Fremantle by 6 (or less) in a low scoring affair like 74-68. If Fremantle upsets Sydney, this will be my team for good.
Essendon upsets NMelbourne. I also like Essendon since that great comeback I watched (half ;)).
PAdelaide beats Richmond by 20 or more.

Just watched the hi-lites of NMelbourne-Essendon... amazing, even more impressive than watching a game full length.
Great comeback and some truly unbelievable goals by both sides.

No doubt. I am here to stay. Found another sport to watch and really get into. :)

... and all this by pure chance when I just stumbled over the 89 final documentary by cruising trou youtube some days ago.

Nth v Ess was a highlight of an otherwise anti-climactic weekend of football.

Next week's contests should be great, North Melbourne v Geelong, a bit like the Superbowl of a couple of years ago with two brothers facing off as coaches.

And Fremantle v Port, two port cities, two "second teams" doing battle.

I suspect each of these games will be more interesting than the 2 the result from it.

I think Hawthorn and Sydney are just too good for everyone else and unless something quite outstanding happens we'll see them play in the grand final.

Very good summation of the situation.

Freo never really in the Sydney game at a soulless ANZ.

I enjoyed seeing the passion of the Port supporters in the prison bars jumper:D against Richmond. But I would have enjoyed seeing the tigers put in a more creditable effort for their long suffering fans.

I think you have made foxxy more knowledgeable on the rules than 90% of the fans:eek::p.

GO HAWKS!. :)

From the scores... yeah only one sounds to have been great. OTOH, I think that game alone (NMelbourne-Essendon) made it a good weekend?!

Since the streams didn´t work (well) on my Computer, I consider to order the AFL ticket from http://watchafl.afl.com.au/. Which would you guys suggest? The prices seem fair...

The jumper was great, good to see the AFL flexing a bit on issues like that.

Richmond, after spending so long trying to make the finals and get absolutely smashed, a total shellacking, terrible performance, should have finished ninth.

That took the gloss off what could have been a perfect Father's Day afternoon on the couch watching footy for me, as it was I had a nap, so it wasn't a total loss.

I have never used it but I have seen people recommend it.

Bear in mind there are only five games left this year before the off season:(.

If you like watching comeback games try this one between Essendon and North Melbourne from 2001. Not a final but still one of the best matches ever. :D

A weekly pass costs 10 €. I think it´s the best value. All playoffs would be 29 €, but since 1/4 is played, I think I´ll skip that.
Most likely I take the pre-final games, and Grand Final = 20 €

Yeah I like comebacks. But even without comebacks, games can be great (see 1989 GF). Just don´t like full bore (like most soccer games, sorry couldn´t resist :D).

Thanks for the link. I´ll watch it, while you can enjoy live games the coming weekend.

Homebush needs 65k+ to generate an atmosphere. I've been to multiple matches from different sports and the atmosphere can be dead. State of Origin's are quite good though.

Have just seen it. Holy cow... how is that possible
Not only being down by 69, but having erased that deficit to all but one point in just 1 1/2 quarter (from 6 mins into 2nd to 17 mins into 3rd).
I guess it´s the greatest comeback ever.

About the style: I am not yet into tactic details, so what changed in the style of play from 2001 to 2014?
