meh, that's because of the cold ;)

:D

What a performance! It's just so great when he's riding like this. He might be gritting his teeth but I didn't have the feeling he was struggling.

This season should be fun!

Edit: Just heard the ES commentary - AC's riding style is 'incongruous'??! WTH are these folk on? Incongruous meaning 'inappropriate, unbecoming, lacking in harmony?? Are they watching the same guy as me?

You assume Kirby knows what incongruous means.

On Dutch Eurosport Karsten Kroon said he loves watching Alberto climb :) - seems to me Kirby was talking **** again!

Especially when the other rider on the screen is... Froome

Sorry - fatal mistake, I agree!

I know, talking about Froome's 'style' in the same breath offends me.

As for 'fat' (LOL!) AC certainly doesn't have the 'knife-blade' lean look he has when he's optimum weight.

Ah, that's a nice gesture. He's one classy guy, AC.

They actually talked about how Froome did not look good on a bike and Kirby said many nice things about Contador. I was shocked.

His thighs are not as marked as when he is slimmest (If that is a word) ;).

Yes. Not a day without a serious Kirby-hiccup but he was uncharacteristical
supportive of Alberto today and more or less admitted he was the best rider. All it takes is a ride like this on a rather low-key rated race (compared to GT) for this to happen.

I agree, but whilst he did say some good things - how AC was a lovely guy, etc., there is still the marked tendency - which irritates me more than anything - to see things and talk about things from the perspective of Froome.

That said, the other bloke (Matt S?) seems to appreciate Alberto, so he kind of levels things out.

Indeed. I don't understand the people that say that Froome was closing in, because Contador wasn't going all out.
His entire body was showing he was going all out. Just like Froome.
Both ain't at their peaks and both will improve.

I just really hope Bertie's Giro won't hurt him at the Tour, but I'm confident Alberto will be ready at the Tour.

Pray all the favourites stay on their bikes this year.

When Contador is going really deep his shoulders are up to his ears and he collapses into the saddel, neither of wich he did today. He had another kick if he needed it.

At the same time, I am not convinced Froome dug really deep. He accepted Contador was stronger at this stage and is riding his numbers.

Amen to the rest of your post :D

Agree with this, both have improvement to make, both will fight to the end. we are in for a great Tour!

Finally managed to log in again. Been lurking since forever.

I'm so happy with and for Alberto and wish him nothing but the best. I remember how heartbroken I was after the Tour, then came the surprise Vuelta. And now this season. What a champ. Truly an inspiration.

According to Greg Lemond, in an interview on Gazzetta.it http://www.gazzetta.it/Ciclismo/20-02-2015/greg-lemond-intervista-eurosport-tour-giro-nibali-contador-froome-quintana-uci-armstrong-pantani-100963707485.shtml, when asked about the possibility of the Giro-Tour double, Greg said "If you are feeling well, don't have any accidents, with two weeks of rest after a grand tour you are stronger."

Of course the question remains, how long can you hold peak form? However the past tells us that it is possible to win both.

In any case today's Gazzetta dello Sport mades some superlative commentary about the Spaniard and his success yesterday: Contador Tears FroomeTo Pieces (Contador Sbrana Froome) (was in the title):D

"Stage win, first place reenforced. BRUTAL."

"Yes," admits the Tinkoff-Saxo captain, "maybe I was even a bit precipitous in attacking. I said to myself 'I'll do a test equal to those in training, but in a race'. The real objectives are down the road, but how much morale!"

"I try to win everytime a put a number on my back." And this without forgetting perhaps the most worrysome thing (for his rivals): "Even if it doesn't seem like it, I still have to loose weight. For this reason I had doubts about this climb. There were severe grades and if you're not in the right place with your weight, you pay for it. But I have power. And I can improve."
