at the Vuelta pres Contador said he will take San Luis easier than last year, with the intention of arriving at his main objectives on form, so maybe well see him coming in a little bit back like at Criterium 2010.

He did say last year he felt bad and overweight and still won, but if hes saying hell take it easier he will probably take it easier.

I don't believe it, i want to see him race before concluding anything.

He really doesn't care anymore does he? It seems like he really has lost his motivation like someone mentioned a few days ago.

chill out flor- gotta remember there is the stupid PT points system issue too, which forces Bjarne to send other riders to accumulate them instead of Alberto, since his won't count & the team has to get sufficient to keep the PT Licence.

he'll be sharp by Tour's time for sure :)

I think he will start in the Vuleta only the Tour is gained with relatively small losses like in 2009 which is highly unlikely.

Good point. Alberto winning races is costly for saxo in terms of WT points.
However the Saxo line up for San Luis isn't too strong either.

Maybe he'll work for Noval for a change:p

You don't get WT points for San Luis, do you? So he might as well win it.

He gets points, but they don't count towards the team when considering their licence.

Is that how it works? If he wins the Tour, do they not award top points to the 2nd place rider?

No it doesn't work that way. If he scores x points, they count for every ranking except the one used when distributing the licenses. so he gets the points but they just don't count for one ranking.

So he can for example win the UCI-ranking, right?

he can

“Personally, Alberto Contador wins good points. He may even win the WorldTour. But when the season ends and the sporting evaluation of the teams are made, his points will not be included in the in the accounts,” Carpani told the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

this still makes me angry, especially if this will stop Alberto from winning certain races

Agree, I think it is pretty ridiculous that there are guys like Contador or Valverde who can easily score tons of points yet the teams don't get the benefit of those points. And it's even worse if this ends up keeping those guy's from winning races that they could win.

Why would he not win because of it? How would that benefit Saxo? You mean like gift wins to Roche or Kreuziger?

Bertie earned 290 WT points in his very abbreviated 2012 season (Eneco and the Vuelta); finishing 12th in the rankings. As has been pointed out, none of those points counted towards Saxo UCI license.

Officially that is. Of course they keep his points/results and strength in mind. If you read the regulations carefully, we make those points more important than they really are. It's just the best shortcut to qualify for the sporting criterion, only one of four criteria that is taken into account, in what we could describe as nothing less than the discretionary power of the licence commission to award a licence (or not, in the case of Katusha, unfortunately).

Don't know if it would happen, but since Contador's points don't count for the team, the team might try to focus on other riders to win the races instead of helping Contador to win them. And who knows if those other riders would be able to pull it off.

If Contador or Valverde don't win as many races that they could win due to this, than that wouldn't be very good.

Definitely do not see this happening. As the poster above said the points are far.from.the be all end.all of the wt system. + sponsors want exposure from winning. That's far more.important to.them than wt spots.in the future.

Besides saxo have put all their faith in contador. They don't seem to be worried at all.

Contador likes to compete and with that in mind I can't imagine him showing up for an event in less than competitive form and a battling mindset. I really can't recall a race where he didn't at some point make his presence known. He's not one to ride in the pack for base miles--unless he has in fact lost his motivation to a certain degree of which I'll believe it when I see it.
