Cobbles are much less predictable than mountains. Mountains are all about being the best, and Riis probably feels confident that the best climber in the world is the best clmber in the world.

Maybe it's a poor translation, but here's the quote in English:

Turns out this quote was inaccurate in an important way. From Tinkoff's press release:

I could add that Riis made a lot of hubbub last year about how much Contador was going to attack in the final week and he never did, so that's a second example of how Riis saying something to the press doesn't mean much.

Riis and Contador must have noticed how weak Astana were. Nibali will be lonely in the next two weeks at least with riders in blue jerseys. None of the other teams impressed. Nibali still looks good and Porte went well on the sort of climb that does not suit him.

They can send Rafal up the road the same way they would have sent Kreuziger up. Rafal might not be a gc threat, but that will at least take the pressure off TS to chase.

The Send a man up tactic works effectively only when the man send up is high up in GC.

Only Astana can use that tactic now by sending up Fugslang.

Which won't happen. Fuglsang is overrated as a climber.

T-Mobile used that tactic back in the day. Vino goes up the road, Kloden and Ullrich lead the chase to pull him back.

Agreed. Unfortunately Saxo, Movistar and others are going to have to FORCE Astana to chase. Otherwise, they will be content to sit on their lead. That being said, putting someone in the break tomorrow (today) could be helpful to drive over the top and in the flat if a GC candidate put in a successful attack on the final climb tomorrow (today).

This looks like Riis is asking other teams to control the race in the initial parts of the race.
Otherwise he will send his 6 boys upfront and decimate the field.


i mean, this is just mind-games. i dont think Riis is foolish enough to talk abt tactics before a stage.

Also, saying Monday doesnt give away anything. Monday is Contador territory.

Saxo can still force Astana to chase by trying to send groups up the road, Paulinho + Majka, Majka + Rogers or something like that. Astana can't afford Contador having multiple teammates up the road, especially on a stage like today.

Maybe guys like TJVG,Talansky,JVDB who have lost some time will try to send teammates up the road and try to bridge...atleast that might make Astana chase but again that tactic may not be used so early in the tour
