Glad he got his stage win, definitely deserved it with his attacking throughout the race. Best stage to do it too.

The best Grand Tour rider of the last decade is finishing of in the best possible manner. #LV2017 @lavuelta @albertocontador #queenstage

I can imagine a better scenario for him to ride off into the sunset, but it's nice to see him retire on a positive note.

I don't know, look at that finish line face - so defiant, like a man who's got more in the tank.....

Either way, thanks Alberto, this was a great race for your fans and fans of cycling. Next year prediction - BOREDOM!!!

If you got to write the story before today, you couldn't have wrote it more beautiful than this. I haven't cried many to sports many times, but today was one of them. Cycling will not be the same for many years!

I didn't cry, but I almost did! Wow that was awesome! I'm as excited as when he won the 2012 and 2014 Vuelta.

What a champion, absolutely brilliant ride.

Hard to think of a more fitting way to end a great career.

That was a perfect storybook ending.

With Contador gone and Nibali so unnibalicized, we're in for some long seasons of dreadful GT riding.

Anyone got/timed Berto's time up Angliru (from when they turn left in La Vega, I assume)? Or is it mentioned in the stage thread?

While I'm not exactly Alberto's fan, I have to give him some credit for how he finished the race and his career and I'm happy for all his fans.

I have come over here to pick a bone
Ever since last year 'fans' on here have been saying Contador is past it...too old, canot do long stages, etc
I constantly said I hoped he never read these threads and how some of you wriitng him off...even his supposed biggest 'fans'
I always beleived in him

He was never too old... He would have won this Vuelta but for one bad day in Andorra
He has finished stronger than Frooome & Nibali

He could be riding the Giro next year ....

Well done Alberto Contador ...
Happy retirement

I am in floods of tears! What a way to go out! And how great was Pantano, riding himself to a standstill. Honorable mention to Mas. I bet Alberto would have been so pleased to have him there.

Wow, Alberto, I am going to miss you.
