He rode very well today, no team in sight :( Then he got overconfident and tried to shed them all. He is young, hopefully he learned today; to manage himself and not underestimate his opponents.

Kid with a bright future :)

Great ride by Talansky. Such losses are a part of learning process. If one doesn't attack with today's result he will never learn how to attack properly.

Where is the Garmin Team?

What an inspired ride today... I was wondering his tactics and thinking he should have held back but then I looked in the stage results and didn't see a single Garmin Sharp rider besides him... Is that possible that they all abandoned or do my eyes just suck? If he knew he had no team than his tactic is really admirable! Very impressive. If he had had one rider in the finale to chase Porte he would still have the jersey and a great shot at the overall.

Agreed. Not the smartest ride, but I enjoyed the effort. He's got a lot of confidence, that kid.

Garmin's team isn't the strongest at P-N and yesterday they worked hard to defend the jersey. Add the work they needed to do on the first part of the stage today and the support riders are gone before the last climb.

Talansky did very well for a long period on his own today, but was inspired by Scarponi to try and make the race in the end. That was a mistake, but he will learn.

Only thing Talansky learned today that if he wants to win something big he has to go to Sky

He would've been a great last man today for Porte, who was in control and all the time, and didn't even suffer at all by the looks of his last km's. Talansky obviously wasted his energy too much, he just had to be in Porte's wheel when he went.(not saying he would've held it to the end) When you're leading the race with only a handful of seconds you shouldn't have to chase Menchov. He was rather ****ed about having made those mistakes, but that's why he's not the most liked guy out there.(at least from what his teammates have said)

A couple of days ago he was criticized for being a wheeelsucker, and today he's criticized for attacking. He won me today.

"I attacked three times. The first two were fine, the third was a mistake,” Talansky said. “You can say that now. If it had worked, it wouldn’t have been a mistake. A mistake is a gamble that doesn’t work. If it works, everyone says you’re genius."

Solid ride, but as usual Sky's man is a step above the others. Remember Porte was their 4th guy in the Tour last year, and still he was toying with the field today. Sky is so far ahead of everyone else, it's amazing.

Both Talansky and Porte seem quite humble. No fat heads there. Good for cycling, both of them, I think.

Props to both.

I think he did the right thing trying and hewas worried about the gap going into the final TT understandably even though he is a good TT rider but after the first few attempts I would have let TJVG and the others set the pace. Trouble is none of them wanted to lead and the gap probably would have been even bigger to Porte. Not sure what TJVG was thinking. May not have had the legs on the day. Porte would have won anyway and is in the box seat now to win the overall.

Andrew, you poor, young and naive soul, the only thing that's going to rescue is 'marginal gains'!

Unfortunately, the Garmin roster in Paris-Nice are the riders getting ready for the classics which explains why Talasnky doesn't have the climbing support he needs. Out of everybody, probably Summie is his biggest asset in the climbs.

While I'll pay respect for T-man's guts and he's a good rider to watch, I actually think he partly lost it today by attacking more than he needed to. Yes, he has panache, but he would likely be closer to winning if he had relaxed a bit more.

It was a learning experience for the young kid. He grew up a lot today.

Talansky did a very good ride today- Porte although he looked as if he was "struggling" (lol) according to Eurosport just had a bit more.

The idea of Talansky not having a team on this stage is a bit weird. It's not as if Sky were riding a hypersonic pace and they were doing the job for Talansky- Porte was just the strongest and unlike Wiggins can actually attack/ go to the finish against a group of 8 or so behind. Also if Talansky did have a team, Porte might have attacked even more/ we would not have seen Talansky ride with the courage and skill that he did.

Any idea what his program is later?

If Talansky had a Hesjedal or Dan Martin they may have survived to the point where Porte attacked and been able to control the gap a bit better. I think Porte wins the stage under any scenario but there was a lot of dead weight in the chase and Talansky himself was still one of the strongest even though he spent more time on the front than any of them.

Apart from Scarponi, yeah. Those three were the strongest, IMO.
