I'm in the Philippines, and managed to see the fight live, for free. I was planning to pay to see it at a Recreation center, but I lost my internet connection where I live, and ended up going to an internet cafe for a while..There was a restaurant right across the street showing the fight, and I walked in--actually, rode in on my bike. No one asked for any money. I got a seat right in front of the TV, I've never had a better view of a fight. As everywhere over here, the noise level, of both the TV and the obviously partisan crowd, was 20-30 db beyond sanity, but otherwise it was fine.. I've lost a lot of money over here, so a freebie is always welcome.
I thought the fight was about as exciting as it could be, given Mayweather's style. I agree with moving target's take, Manny was competitive in every round, but didn't land enough shots. After the live fight, I watched the end of the fight on tape delay through a local station, and the Filipino commentators had Manny winning 8-4. I had already seen the compubox data by that time, so was wondering what they would say when they saw that. They were a little flustered, thought there must be something wrong with the data. Mayweather actually threw slightly more punches than Pacquiao, a very big surprise, and landed a much higher percent, as expected. Manny landed less than 20%, typical of a Mayweather opponent. So it's hard to see Manny getting the decision.. Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, whose fight judgments I've come to respect, had it 115-113, which I think is about a best-case scenario. Manny had one big moment in I think the fourth round when he pinned Floyd in the corner and pummelled him. The crowd went nuts, but most of the punches just hit Floyd's gloves, and Manny may have just tired himself out a little throwing them all..
The best Mayweather fight may have Maidana I last year. Maidana really flustered Floyd in the opening rounds, and one of the judges called it a draw. That fight could have gone either way, and had it been in Argentina, Maidana might well have won..Manny is faster than Maidana, and better defensively, but it may be Floyd learned a lot from that fight about how to counter him. When he fought Maidana the second time, he had far less trouble with him..
I think this fight ends the what-if-they had-met-sooner discussion. I think if they'd met five years ago, the result would have been similar. They both would have been a little faster, and as Alpe said, Manny might have had a little better chance of a KO, but most likely it would have been a decision like this.
