The Germans are probably the only nation to self reflect on their past doping scandals. The Russians never went through that process post 89. Some of the stories are horrifying of what occurred to the athletes, most didn't even know they were doped.

The Dutch have done some exposes, the Spanish next to nothing and Australia just doesn't care with regards to mass doping in their country. Its at epic proportions especially in Swimming and both codes of football.

Good post hog.

I would add; the French were the best at looking at their own doping, they loved torturing themselves with self repenting doping stories along with the Italians.

East Germans, yes, but it was too obvious and a lot of the athletes spoke out after the reunification. Some actually spoke about pre-1990, and some denied, while others stayed quiet. Pretty standard stuff for doping, really. Some will speak out (whether they are/were clean), some will deny, and some will just keep quiet (for various reasons).

West Germans, however are a different story. Perhaps the East Germans were a little more sophisticated (or went all in, most of the time) and garnered better results. The West was huge into its football, as it is today (most top German footballers were born/raised in the western part) and they too, actually had a good amount of success in track and field, obviously fortunate to have three world class tennis players in Graf, Becker and Stich, but swimming, among others as well. It's just that when it came to some of these big Olympic sports like swimming, they were overmatched by the East. We now know why.

The West also probably hides behind the East in terms of doping. Everyone focuses in on the East, but as I've posted earlier, the West also sponsored doping. We will never know how much, but I am willing to bet enough to make you scratch your head, at least. The Germans beating a heavily favored Hungarian team (most of that team was at the top of its game) in 1954, then the Dutch in 1974, and the stories about widespread doping in the Bundesliga obviously needs to raise a few eyebrows. Dieter Baumann, was a story in the late 80's and throughout the 90's. He was busted for doping.

I don't have any doubt that the West was doping its athletes. Just because their women's swim team and track and field sprinters and shot putters don't look like they are on beaver tranquilizers, doesn't mean they didn't use. I am sure the West was aware of what was going on. Maybe they didn't have the same anabolic steroids that made them bulk up so much, but the doctors and team leaders must have known that the East was doing something and they tried to keep up.

Sorry for my usual 'they all dope' rants...

Back in 1965, before the UK began its own state sponsored program, and in a quiet year for sport, Tom Simpson won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. There has been no real attempt to address one of the greatest scandals in sporting history which lead to an appalling tragedy.

It could be a long story, but could you please expand on the French and the Italians? Perhaps I missed something.

Because the French host the sports event with the highest profile doping culture this has kick started a reaction. I would suggest that French cyclists (for example) are under huge political pressure not to dope. This feature is beyond Anglos to grasp and the fact that you are even asking is proof.

It would be a very long story. What I meant was that l'equipe used to have its own doping news department to chase up doping stories even on their own cyclists. The Festina trails was a significant event with Virenque doing a lot of crying, hugging Wily Voet. French law changing to make doping a criminal act, The French senate hearing into 1998 doping at the Tour and releasing the names of cyclists including French ones.

Italians much the same with their doping trials and 74 cases into Pantani.

Oh ok. Nothing new then. I thought it was some investigation into possible systematic doping/corruption/money laundering at their sports federations.

*digs out calculator*

2.27% better than anyone else has ever been.
Quite the marginal gain.

I think we finally found out what Sir Dave was talking about when he uttered those now famous two words.

The French senate hearing were recent - as of 2013.

But no, nothing new because the French have been through all this in the past, changed their laws and had a retrospective on doping.

The UK has not. Their time will come, they will be a parliamentary inquiry and they too will make changes. However the UK was smarter than the French by ensuring all their own people sit in positions of power in the sporting governing bodies.

The Radcliffe exoneration was absurd by IAAF/WADA, utterly absurd. Saugy wrote two papers which in one instance he said the samples were sound (before the Radcliffe story broke) and then when he exonerated her he stated they were not. Always helps to have your friends in high places.

Some really good exchanges on the past two or three pages, imo&fwiw.
Agree with Hogs last post and the point about UK eventually catching up with other countries.

The Germans only care about football though. And they have never ever, and will never ever self reflect on football. They may occasionally sacrifice some smaller sports, but its all in the interest of the one true religion.
