Cadel Evans to Gazetta regarding Tirreno and Tour:
"(Contador) He's a great rider, but we cannot talk about fighting... it's more a matter of saving as more energies as possible. If I will be able to get the same result as this past year it would be great."
Lets hope this stupid thread is now finished after this and the Contador fanboys can stop carrying on like idiots because their god wasn't praised by another rider.
The thread was legitimate, as Cadel did indeed neglect to mention Contador when naming favorites in 1 particular interview, but chose Levi and Tony Martin, and then when asked, suggested that Contador was no longer the same force because he lost this years Tour.
The OP had not imagined the incident but rather, provided a link to an interview where you can see what happened.
You will also find that the article was brought up in 2 other threads as well as this, showing that a number of people felt shocked enough, when they read the article to bring it up.
Secondly you will find that lots of people, including myself, took a none judgmental, openminded approach to the article, suggesting that there must be a mistranslation or some other unexplained incident, that gets Cadel Evans to name Tony Martin but not the 3 time champion, when listing favourites.
Thirdly, finding what Evans says in this article surprising, and commenting on it has Nothing to do with liking Contador or not. You will find that a some of the posters who expressed surprise are Evans fans, or even Contador haters.
Everyone aknowledges that Contador is at the very least a major gc candidate, and was therefore shocked to see Levi Leipheimer being mentioned above him.
Its not about wanting Contador to be mentioned. I dont think even Albertos staunchest fans care if his opponents name him as a favourite or not.
A comment 99% of the time reveals far more about the person giving it than the person receiving it.
It was Evans who made the comment so we were all wondering whether Evans had gone nuts, not whether Contador had ceased to be a Gt contender.
As it happens we still dont know the story behind the linked article. Was Evans trying to play mind games? Did he for a sec think that Contador had gone weaker?
As far as we know Evans may have realised it was a mistake and is now trying to make amends.
My own theory is that Evans, like a lot of cyclists, just said something very stupid. Very often cyclists contradict themselves drastically, and come out with unexplainable comments. Ive seen it many many times. Contador is guilty of this as are a lot of other cyclists. Might be something to do with the mentality of individuals who are able to achieve such feats.
Seems this is just Evans joining the club and his sudden change of mind doesnt expalin the original comment.
