The consensus seems to be that Cancellara would have never been able to win the Tour de France.

However, if I'd said in December 2008 that Wiggo would one day win the Tour, you'd have put me in an asylum.

Could Fabian, at the height of his physical prowess, have won the Tour de France if he had changed his training regimen accordingly?

If´by "change his training regimen accordingly" you mean going on the Wiggins diet, massive weight loss with absolute power gain, then yes.

Possibly, he has the engine!

It's a pity he didn't, then. Once he won RVV for the first time, he should have switched his focus to GT racing.

Can't wait for him to retire

He'll still be better than Valverde though.

On Vive Le Velo he said his nicest win is the Ronde van Vlaanderen 2013. Glad to see he rates it above an Olympic Gold medal (or silver) and Milan-San Remo.

Thank god he didn't target gc in grand tours. He's equal or better than the best of this generations classic riders. He would never have gotten more out of the sport riding gc. He would have become a boring rider like Wiggo, probably not winning more than one GT. I'm gonna miss him big time in the spring classics.

One GT is still better than the nth spring classic.

lol, come on! You, of all people, rating the stick thin GT riders achievements above those of the muscled classic specialists!

First up Cancellara would never have made it as a GT racer, he's just not built for it. Second up winning a monument/spring classic is at the very least the equal of a GT win if not better, they are harder to win than a GT as you can't make a mistake or a bad day , you can make mistakes and have bad days in a GT and still have time over the 3 weeks to recover from it.

His wins in RvV and PR were impressive, because he won them by simply being the strongest. I also liked it when he left the sprinters behind by attacking 1K before the finish in MS!

The sprinters were already gone because of Gilbert's attack on the Poggio. Pozzato and Gilbert were second and third.

Yes, I must have romanticized it a little in my memory. ;)

So FC is packing up and heading to Rio. Where are the people who were calling for Cav's head when he did the same yesterday?
Yes, I am looking for them too. Just the one, who only posted because you requested it! No double standards here. Or are they all still in bed and oblivious to this news?

Cav won a couple stages though whilst Canc got zilch and barely featured at the pointy end in any of them.

How would you penalise Canc? Refuse to neutralise any race situation in the remaining stages so he can complain about how it should have been on twitter?
