To be fair, his quadriceps were never skinny even though he was in shape.

This seems like such a lifetime ago. A lot of new riders have come up and shown their class. From an up and comer he has been reduced to a bit of a joke. Such a shame if he can't turn it around, and more and more i am thinking he won't.

I no longer hold any hope that Betancur will come close to realizing his promise. Talent can only take you so far; you only need to observe the monk-like existence of most successful cyclists to understand that someone like Betancur just doesn't have it in him to make the necessary lifestyle adjustments.

I do however think he can still achieve some measure of success. Being in Europe alone with his family and away from all the distractions in Colombia should go a long way towards focusing his mind. I think the first few races have gone as expected; he should be in much better shape for the Giro where he will hopefully be able to fight for stage wins.

I agree 100% with you on this.

But this is overdoing it. Nobody fully realizes their promise. Guys like Fignon or LeMond left a lot on the plate. But they also achieved a great deal. That's what we should focus on, IMHO.

Also, I remember a podcast or a video a while ago where veterans were talking about their biggest mistake as neo-pros, and mistake number one was overtraining. Hinault famously let himself go over the winters. Anquetil was no monk (external). Neither was Armstrong, nor Pantani ...

Still has not finished a race.

Next two races for Betancur:

Having made his debut with the team at Milan-San Remo, Carlos Betancur then headed north for the E3 Harelbeke and Gent-Wevelgem cobbled classics but is yet to finish a race with his new team. The Colombian has been selected for both the GP Miguel Indurain and Vuelta Ciclista a La Rioja 1.1 one-day races with the Circuit de La Sarthe likely to be his first stage race of the season next week.

I hope he trained well over the winter. otherwise it will be useless like last year. his form won't become near what he could. in 2014 he had the worst winter in terms of weight but at least his base condition was much better so he could still win paris nice. last year he was thinner but had trained less

I can understand him not finishing a semi classic...But surely he has to turn up at the next 2 races?
