Quintana hinted (see also the Valverde thread) that Betancur will help Valverde in the Ardennes and afterwards he wants to gain a spot in the Tour-team
CB has a lot of work to do in order to gain a spot on the Tour team for Movistar.

I'm looking forward to seeing him make it.
In all seriousness, I'd send him to the TDU. It's a race that suits him and if Betancur wants leadership at Paris Nice and a free role in the Ardennes this would be a good place to start.

If he does turn up overweight, then racing in 35-40 degree heat should melt some lard off. Just keep him away from the Cooper's and 4 'n 20's :D

There's no free role in the Ardennes with Valverde in your team

Costa sorta had a free role in the Ardennes while at Movistar.

Not sure if you're joking, but heat is awful for losing weight. It makes you more tired with less effort, so you end up using less energy. Plus, your body burns less calories keeping your core temperature up.

In any case, AG2R in 2015 already tried the whole 'force him to train by constantly having him in races' thing. It only worked up to a point.

I wouldn't really call that a free role (even sort of). Costa had the task of responding to late moves, and maybe to attack himself late in the race. But the idea was to put pressure off Valverde and to allow him to just follow

In theory Movistar has more cards to play now in the final. A good Moreno and Betancur could benefit of the full focus on Valverde. In the recent years there was less to zero diversity in the Movistar tactics, especially if you would compare it with teams like Katusha who would have more men in the final so they could bet on both Caruso (solo) and Rodriguez for example.

If you look after yourself it works but true, it can go wrong. The best place for a pro to base themselves in the Aus summer is Bright, Victoria, a few hours from Melbourne. There's no less than 3 Cat 1 climbs about an hours ride away and more teams use it as TDU prep every year.

The only positive thing that can be taken from that article is that he seems very impressed with Valverde. There are many reasons to dislike Valverde, but one thing he can't be accused of is a lack of professionalism. The guy turns up in good nick to races all season long.

A good sign. Betancur is going to live in Pamplona with his family. Fellow Colombians like Uran, Quintana and Anacona also inhabitants of Pamplona.

Nice. Pamplona is very nice. This might mean Betancur will be a force by April 2016, and a monster during San Fermin.

Ok, that could work. When he's in shape he seems to have crazy recovery, just look at 2013, he was a beast in the Ardennes classics and one of the strongest riders in the 2nd and 3rd week of the Giro.

I do not think my move supposes a second chance for me. I see is as a continuation on the same trajectory," Betancur said. "I face this new stage eagerly, there are many reasons to find the best team in the world. Now it only remains to try. My goal is to do well wherever I go. I am a young man who has sacrificed so much, and the last two years I have suffered will not become an impediment to achieve great things in the future."

If he sucks again in 2017 there even ain't no entry in the Gianni Savio last chance saloon for 2018, I fear.
