Betancur will be doing three Flemish races, Dwars door Vlaanderen, E3 and Gent-Wevelgem. Unzue clearly wants him to suffer in order to re-understand the metier of a cyclist. A trick which has proven to be successful with riders as D.Quintana and Rui Costa..

All races where they require bodies to complete participation rules and save the rest of the important members from fatigue crashes etc

And then, if he proves he's on the right track, the reward will come in Ardennes participation alongside Bala and Dani

I had high hopes for the Movi-Beta pairing but I'm feeling more and more like this isn't going to end well.

It sounds fair since we are talking about Betancur!

How is it cruel ? Geraint Thomas rides these races ...Even Valverde & Niaro Quintana

Could be as Betencur is not going to get thin enough to climb mountains he might find he has an affinity with the cobbles...at least his weight will help some what in Belgium

Betencur for the win at Paris Roubaix 2017 :D

Flat or mountains, sprinter or climber, weight only helps when it's muscle.

You forgot about classics' men. The theory goes having a little higher body fat than your typical sprinter/climber helps you put a little weight in that back wheel, have a little more in store for the finale, have a little more cushioning for your joints. Also, its far harder to keep muscle while trying to be a light as possible than to only build muscle and let the weight settle (which is going to be fairly low anyway if you're a professional cyclist and training hard and often unless you're eating whole hogs for dinner). Rightly or wrongly, most classics guys have tended to carry a little extra mass. So guys like Museeuw and Cancellara were/are both a fairly fit 6'1", 80kg, and not quite as ridiculously lean as other riders.

Andit could be worse than Carlos finding a new calling on the cobbles

Any rider in the peloton has enough fat to complete the hardest one-day races. 1 kg of fat contains more than enough calories for an entire high-mountain Tour stage ridden at a high pace. The limiting factor is glycogen.

Therefore, piling on more fat than strictly necessary in the hopes of having a bit more in the tank makes no sense.

if there's wind, extra weight can help.

as long as he doesn't ruin oliveira's chances in these races, I'm fine with it.

+1. He has all the talent in the world, but something is wrong in his head. It feels like reading a thread about Johnny Manziel...

Just took this in Harelbeke a couple of minutes ago.

He didn't look very happy to be here in Belgium :D

Clearly carrying more weight than his colleagues, but wasn't as bad as last year. Going in the right direction, but not there yet. Although it won't hurt him on the cobbles today.

Great picture, thanks. It's like sighting Yeti, so rare. Still more like Fatancur than Betancur, 204.5 Km of pain today.

I really thought he would get better again but just looks at these legs. They are fat even for the standards of a normal man. :D
