Me go fast and no think, that why me sprinter.

What's with the hating on sprinter in general? Clearly Cavendish's comments are dumb, though more in the pointless and offensive sense of the word than the low IQ sense, but that hardly reflects on sprinters in general. Th Chickes sound just as dumb and he's a climber. Most athletes, sprinters, climbers, runners or discuss throwers, don't need to be smart to succeed, but that hardly means that they are in fact all stupid.

I'm just Hatin' cos I'm a Hater. Not really. I'm a huge fan of quality field sprinters, but more the Oscar Freire type than Chav man.

Its just that often the most successful sprinters are the thick and angry type. (I've got quite a kick myself). In a field sprint that last thing you want to think about is what you're doing and why you are doing it.

Yes, but there is a different between Cipo and Cav.
Cipo seemed to just want to entertain and was flamboiant; it was more that Cipo built himself up. I can't remember any interviews where Cipo attacked another rider.
On the other hand, Cav both builds himself up and tears others down, i.e. he's a bully.

True, Cipo always had a bit of mischief about him, and carried it of with bags of charisma and charm. Cav is just gobby. But still entertaining in its own way, particularly for making some forumers more wound up than if he had been busted for drugs!

I hardly ever bother posting on here as quite frankly most of the posts are drivel but dear God (and if I may be permitted an anglo-saxon riposte) what a bunch of tossers.

Do you guys have lives ? For my sins I work in the middle east where, it has to be said life is in many respects a little dull yet even I can't find it in me to get so excited about the probably tongue in cheek mouthings of a cyclist.

I love cycling, the sport, racing and just being out on my bike yes even here.

So much hate and without wishing to be accused of defending the boy Mark (I'm sure he's more than capable of defending himself) largely based on a misunderstanding of an english colloquialism.

I mean if I said as I once did long long ago in a casino in Las Vegas "I could murder a ***" would you assume I wanted to go out and kill someone or just that I was gasping (oops there I go again) that I was very much in need of a cigarette.

Do please lighten up it's an internet forum for goodness sake or are the more rabid posters (no names no pack drill ((bummer did it again)) so inconsequential in their real lives they feel the need to (metaphorically) throw their weight around on here.

Oh and by the way despite being a Brit I hate tea and my teeth are perfectly straight.

Play nice now children.

Of course you are right on. Virtual realities, like this formum, enable some people to pretend they are saying important things without having to look anyone else in the eye or suffer consequences for stupidity. Not everyone, but some. Sad really.

... and I'm sure your teeth are just lovely!

I say steady on old chap well not lovely perhaps but at least relatively straight and in the main all present and correct.

Yes couldn't agree with you more re: the virtual realities forum thing but then ohhh dear ohhh dear that includes me hmmmmm :) Still I think the point is a little more tolerance might just go a long long way hating a sportsperson for what was probably intended to be a relatively light hearted remark is just a tad ott

I fail to see anonymity being exploited here... I don't see anyone behaving in a socially unacceptable manner. Fear the consequences of looking a mate in the eye and saying "Cavendish is a w@nker" ... oh the repercussions!

Granted I just skimmed most of the thread, but why are people so shocked and upset with his comments? He is absolutely right, albeit arrogant (something we have known for a long time), but he backs it up. I don't blame him for being upset. If Greipel has a problem with how the team is using him, you handle that internally; do not voice frustration and imply you are better than you're own teammate, especially in hindsight. One quick look at their respective palmares will quickly show who the better, more accomplished rider is.

I think an arrogant man is an arrogant man, there is no "backing it up"! I would hate to work with someone like Cavendish. Not shocked though, I always thought he's an ahole.

So whose lead out train would you prefer to be part of, Greipel or Cav? The "nice guy" who wins the small races or the "arrogant to55er" who wins loads and gets you loads of prize-money to share?

So Greipel can't win a flat race where the likes of Boonen and Cancellara weren't going for it, yet he would have been nailed on for MSR?

Cavendish Needs a media coach

Mark Cavendish;
Showed his ugly A.. and it didn't serve him or cycling very well. To relegate all those other races to S... ! status is not only a huge insult to the riders who compete in those events, but also to the fans and the volunteers and workers who put in their time to make the races a reality. His Orthodontist could have done him and the sport of cycling a huge favor by wiring his jaws shut! Good luck in the Tour this year S...mouth you will probably need it .

Not arrogant, just better

Based on what this year? I mean, yea, last year he was all balls and spit, but this year he has sucked wheel and not really sniffed any significant finishes.

Yeah, he may have got 11 wins in his first year and 10 stages of the Tour de France and Milan-San Remo, but what has he won for us LATELY?

I see the Brits of the board are going pretty far out on a limb to defend their Hobbit-like pottymouthed sprinter after his latest round of *** comments.

I have a message for my snaggle-toothed tea-swilling friends on the other side of the pond: it's okay to call an a-hole an a-hole. I'm an American and I can admit that Armstrong is an a-hole, now you silly Brits can grow up and admit that your Hobbit sprinter is in fact an a-hole.

I love this post.

Let's drop the "you just don't know our English" line shall we? Cav may not have been dumping on the races themselves, but he was sure dumping on Griepel by saying that he collects his wins in small races, unlike the mighty Cav. And that's a poor way to treat a teammate or opponent in any culture.

If Team GB can put a decent train together then Cav will have a great shot at winning it, and if he gets beaten it won't be by Greipel.

Then he has to be in a better shape than that he is in now, or the season so far. Because in his current form he is only a second level sprinter

Look Jamsque, I'm more than willing to admit that Cav is currently the best sprinter in the world despite the fact that he has had poor form to start this season, still has poor form right now, has not had a big win yet this season, and is currently being outclassed by another sprinter that's on his own team (Greipel).

So yes Cav is not off to a good start this year, but I do agree with you, he has remarkable palmares especially for a young rider and at the end of last year I can't see anyone not saying that he was the best sprinter in the world bar none.

But sport (and life in general really) is a what have you done for me lately game. Cav is currently fat and out of shape and Greipel is collecting the wins. For Cav to go off on his tirade in this context is not at all admirable. It's one thing to be fan of the way he rides his bike (I am as well) but I just don't see why anyone would bother to attempt to defend this kind of reprehensible behavior. It's not good for his team and frankly these kind of comments are self-destructive as well for a sprinter who relies on a lead-out train of team-mates that need to be kept loyal and happy if one expects them to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.

If you don't mind PS - the highlighted above is where I think Cav's comments have been overplayed.

I don't believe he was saying anything about Griepel when he said 'sh*t small races'.
"If I wanted to just win races I wouldn't ride every ProTour race," said Cavendish. "I understand that at the moment I'm racing to be in my best form for the Tour de France and the world championships. If I wanted to get sh*t small wins, I'd race sh*t small races."

However I agree with you that it is a "poor way to treat his teammate" by saying ...
"There's no chance of Greipel winning a 'monument'"
...it was a pretty arrogant thing to say - but we knew that about Cav anyway.
