So what's the true worth of a rider such as Valverde or Contador to a team in this instance?

Do riders get to keep any prize money as an individual in a race, whether it be an in stage sprint prize, a stage win or race or tour win? or does all money go in to a pool to be split amongst the team at the end of the season?

Will sponsors be happy to be associated with a drug cheat?

Can a team afford to carry a rider that won't be bringing in any tour points, or just as importantly, riding for another rider to win a stage or race?

Simple. The rules state that if a rider is sanctioned for doping, there is the suspension penalty that must be met. Then, the rider is worth no points to any team that picks him up, for the two years following his return. Valverde is now in the midst of one of these ridiculous and vindictive, pointless zones. Even though he is still allowed to score World Tour points, which he recently led, ironically, and absurdly enough.

And yet it was said by the Danish anti doping committee that Contador would, after all, be able to earn points for his future team, as he was tested positive before this rule was applied.

In my ideal scenario, Contador signs with Shack, making Andy and Frank become Bottle 2.1 and Bottle 2.2 for Contador. Bruyneel is caught up in an illegal Trek bike selling scheme and ends up spending 2 years in an eastern European gulag. In his place Riis steps in and he's not happy with how the whole Andy, Frank, Fabian/Saxo Bank thing played out. Andy and Frank go on a manic depressive drinking binge with Stuie, gain weight and actually develop some muscle tone in their emaciated frames. They now descend like lead weights dropped off a cliff but climb like, well, like Stuie. Unwilling to train Andy balloons to 170 pounds, develops a pot in his fire belly (or is it a fire in his pot belly?), and his TT form worsens (could it?). With Andy's results and days racing dropping to just one week in the year, he's soon relegated to doing ToC, ToU and that other race in America with the long name in Colorado. He's unceremoniously shot out the back on every driveway, freeway overpass and speedbump that the peloton encounters. His tweets become even more pathetic blaming Contador for his demise even while he thumbs his messages while getting a tattoo on his belly to cover up the permanent indentation that is the result of his top tube's intrusion on his girth.:D:p

The UCI stopped Valverde signing anything while he was suspended didn't they? Suspect AC will have to wait...

They did not, Movistar announced the Valverde signing in November 2011, his ban ended in January 2012.

They stopped him from wearing the team kit until his suspension had ended, if I'm not mistaken.

Of course Contador can sign a new contract with a team. The start date just have to be after the suspension is over.
